About this deal

Life is full of unexpected challenges but Beth has always avoided anything resembling responsibility. That is until the unthinkable happens. Emmy, Beth's sister and her husband Doug have been in a tragic car accident and it's time for Beth to step up. Overnight Beth becomes guardian for her teenage niece and toddler nephew and her own mother is hellbent on reminding her of her own shortcomings. Is this a step too far for notoriously flighty Beth? After all, up until now the only commitment she's ever held down is Friday drinks at the village pub. Faith is taking the first step even though you don't see the whole staircase." Martin Luther King, Jr This book is one of the best I've read in a long time! I have never read any of the 'Unmumsy Mum' but Sarah Turner's novel 'Stepping Up' is really fresh and engaging and made me laugh out loud and cry in equal measure.

The focus of this book is a worthy one. The author provides many real life examples of people stepping up and doing the right thing and how it has helped their lives and businesses. It is important as we go through life that we are always working on ourselves, learning new skills (physical and mental), and growing. This book is a great tool to use on that journey. I can see myself owning this book (The copy I read is from the library.) and reading it annually, always looking for a new way to apply the wisdom and advice to my life. The consequence of having a seismic shift towards victim thinking means more of us feel that the future is not in our hands but in the hands of forces outside ourselves. And since internal locus of control is positively correlated with happiness, success and initiative while external locus of control is related to anxiety and depression, it's pretty clear that most organizations and society as a whole would be better off if more of us believed we could change things." pg 21 The Matrix “we all have a voice inside us that says we cant step up… there is another voice alongside it that says you can do it and that you want to do it… we can accomplish so much more than we think we can if we are willing to work hard and be as creative as we can be.”An unspeakable tragedy turns Beth’s life upside down, and she finds herself guardian to her teenage niece and toddler nephew, catapulted into an unfamiliar world of bedtime stories, parents’ evenings and cuddly elephants. Having never been responsible for anyone – or anything – it’s not long before she feels seriously out of her depth. FamilyLife®. All Rights Reserved. I follow Sarah Turner aka The Unmumsy mum on the socials and have followed her journey as a mother. Agreeing and championing what she reveals and says. So when I saw that she had written a novel, a work of fiction I knew I wanted to read it but also I had my preconceived ideas. I thought the book would be predictable, light and fluffy and a rom com. Why? I don't know why? I was completely wrong 💕 Stepping Up is the debut novel by Sarah Turner, known for her blog The Unmumsy Mum and her best-selling non-fiction books, The Unmumsy Mum, The Unmumsy Mum Diary and The Unmumsy Mum A-Z. Thanks to Sarah’s publisher, we are incredibly excited to review this early proof edition. Out in March 2022, this feel-good read is sure to be a hit. Commercial, uplifting and women’s fiction fans, read on…

But, nevertheless this was a funny, sad, happy and difficult read. I certainly felt all the emotions. After graduating with first-class honours in Philosophy from The University of Exeter, she dabbled in careers in finance then higher education before a 'warts and all' parenting blog she'd started to let off steam gathered unexpected momentum and writing became her full-time job. I am only one person. Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has – Margaret Mead, noted anthropologist. Stepping Up made me laugh and cry and cringe at various points. Beth started off as a character difficult to sympathise with but as the story progressed Turner was able to make the reader really warm to her.

I’ll never forget the moment I first heard about Yuwa's work with girls in rural India, and the football and educational projects it has been running for the last 8 years. I was at a Storytelling Summit hosted by Microsoft. Franz spoke about the challenges that girls in rural communities face - the threat of child trafficking, domestic violence, sexual abuse and being forced into marriage as child brides.

The characters are brilliantly drawn and I could picture myself at their dinner table and rolling my eyes along with Beth at her mum's interfering comments and finding comfort in her dad's words of wisdom and solid support.
