The Snows of Kilimanjaro, published in the summer of August 1936, has always been regarded to be one of Hemingway’s best short stories. He’s most certainly one of the most influential writers today. He’s the same man who’s coined the notable Iceberg Theory, now widely used in books and media. Part I: "The first forty-nine." Preface to the "The first forty-nine" -- The short happy life of Francis Macomber -- The capital of the world -- The snows of Kilimanjaro -- Old man at the bridge -- Up in Michigan -- On the Quai at Smyrna -- Indian camp -- The doctor and the doctor's wife -- The end of something -- The three-day blow -- The battler -- A very short story -- Soldier's home -- The revolutionist -- Mr. and Mrs. Elliot -- Cat in the rain -- Out of season -- Cross-country snow -- My old man -- Big two-hearted river. Hemingway also describes a spiritual experience during his serious injury. He says he felt that his

I am reading Meyers' masterful biography Hemingway: A Biography and it is fascinating to see how each of these stories encapsulates a piece of Hemingway's personal experience. His life was particularly exciting and turbulent: WWI ambulance driver (where he met John Dos Passos), Parisian journalist, Parisian bohemian writer, Spanish Civil War participant, bull-fighting aficionado, big game hunter, sport fisherman, and inveterate ladies' man, these stories all pull from his catalog of sensations and memories. It is important to note going in that in his writing technique, Hemingway felt that it was equally important to leave out some information so that the reader has to fill in the blanks. He thought of stories as icebergs with 90% of the content left unsaid. This leaves a considerable amount of ambiguity to many of the stories because no moral conclusion is drawn; his goal is to dive as deep into the experience itself so that the reader feels personally involved in the story. Martha Gellhorn served as third wife of Hemingway in 1940. When he met Mary Welsh in London during World War II, they separated; he presently witnessed at the Normandy landings and liberation of Paris. However, after a few months of work, in 1918 he enlisted with the Red Cross to volunteer as an ambulance driver in the First World War. He was sent to the Italian front where he saw the horrors of the trench war. In July 1918, he was seriously wounded from mortar fire, but, despite his injuries and coming under machine-gun fire – still managed to carry two Italian comrades to safety. He was awarded the Italian Silver Medal for this act of bravery. I recently upgraded my rating to 5 stars (originally 4 stars). Many of these stories are too special.

Hemingway’s reputation precedes him: a misogynistic, alcoholic, macho author whose maximum sentence length was five words. Given all this, it is difficult to understand why feminist, vegetarian, and highbrow folks often end up reading and enjoying his work—as I’ve seen happen. Clearly there is more to Hemingway than his myth; but separating the man from his reputation is especially difficult in his case, since the myth, however simplifying, has a substantial grain of truth. This is due to the fact that his classmates once mentioned that people may die with temperatures of 44 degrees or more. In comparison, his fever was 102. Hemingway’s style had some similarities to other modernist writers. It was a reaction against the more elaborate, turgid style of the nineteenth century. Hemingway’s writing was direct and minimalist – often leaving things unstated, but at the same time profoundly moving for bringing the reader into the heart of the story and experience.

And just then it occurred to him that he was going to die. It came with a rush; not as a rush of water nor of wind; but of a sudden, evil-smelling emptiness and the odd thing was that the hyena slipped lightly along the edge of it. After the Second World War, Hemingway bought a home in Finca Vigia (“Lookout Farm”), in Cuba. Here in Cuba, he wrote “The Old Man and the Sea” (1952) – story about an elderly fisherman and devout Catholic, Spencer Tracy. The novel was praised by critics and he awarded the Pulitzer Prize. (1953) An American platoon sets up an ambush against Germans at a road crossing. Graphic story that takes place near the end of WWII. How should a woman act when she discovers her husband is a bloody coward? She’s damn cruel but they’re all cruel. They govern, of course, and to govern one has to be cruel sometimes. The primary theme of this story is confronting death alongside feelings of isolation and regret. It’s not so much that Harry’s afraid of death. Harry’s emotions of regret far overshadow his dread.
