Sony Xperia 10 V review: Stubbornly solid | Expert Reviews

Another Xiaomi phone definitely worth considering is the Poco X5 Pro. In many aspects, it is not too dissimilar to the Redmi Note 12 Pro, like the 6.67-inch, 10-bit Dolby Vision, HDR10+, 120Hz display, the IP53 ingress protection rating and the stereo speakers. There is also the identical 5,000 mAh battery with the same 67W fast charging. Once again, you will be missing out on a telephoto camera, though. That’s flanked by a 12MP ultrawide and a 12MP telephoto lens with 5.2x optical zoom. Sony Xperia 1 V The Sony Xperia 1 V is easily the more capable of the two smartphones with an exciting primary sensor. It’s a new 52MP Exmor T sensor with a unique two-layer transistor within the CMOS that Sony claims helps deliver better performance in low light, touting a 2x improvement compared to the Xperia 1 IV. Up to 10 fps AE burst, up to 30 times per second continuous AF/AE calculation, OIS photo, LED, Photo flash, Photo light, Video light, Hybrid zoom 10x (based on Wide camera 26 mm), AI Super Resolution Zoom, HDR (High Dynamic Range) photo, Manual mode(Photo), QR code reader, Night shooting function, Panorama, Bokeh effect

SIM Free Sony Xperia 10 V 5G 128GB Mobile Phone - Black

Moving onto the more basic Xperia model, and arguably the more interesting of the two, the Xperia 10 V. The 10 IV was a surprise hit for 2022, as it provided a thoroughly enjoyable AV experience despite its reasonable asking price.

Detail-wise, the Xperia 10 V continues to impress, as the finer wrinkles on Galen Erso’s face are nicely defined, as well as the folds on the villainous Krennic’s cape. As Krennic enters the foreground of the scene, we once again get to appreciate how solid the image is, and how three-dimensional it feels. Outlines of characters are clean without looking unnaturally sharp, which helps to create this depth effect.

Xperia 10 V review: Alternatives, pros and cons, verdict Sony Xperia 10 V review: Alternatives, pros and cons, verdict

Let's start with some positives first. The Xperia 10 V finally has a stereo speaker setup and a pretty good one at that - front-facing, well-balanced and decently loud, with a clean output. Making a return - the great ingress protection rating is hard to come by in the midranger space. The same is true for a telephoto camera, let alone one that does a decently good job quality-wise, like we are seeing on the Xperia 10 V. We can't fail to mention the excellent battery life the Xperia 10 V manages from its 5,000 mAh battery and now with notably faster charging, even if still rather slow in the grand scheme of things. The brightness boost on the signature 21:9 HDR display is also great to see this year. The fact that it still looks premium without following the trends of glass and shimmery rear paint jobs can’t be ignored either. Screen

Under the hood, both phones are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, but there’s a notable difference in their capabilities. The Xperia 5 V takes the lead with its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 4nm chipset, offering smooth multitasking and gaming performance. It’s also 5G-enabled, ensuring you stay future-proofed when it comes to network connectivity. It’s an OLED panel, with 10-bit colour and HDR support that ensures streaming TV shows and movies leave a good impression. Contrast is suitably epic, and shadow detail is impressive. Colours are a little on the cool side, but largely accurate – and easy to tweak using the RGB sliders in the display settings menu. Brightness has also been given a welcome boost for 2023, climbing north of 900 nits when outdoors in High Brightness Mode (HBM). Even without it there’s enough illumination here to challenge the top mid-range mobiles. It’s a good job, too, because Sony is facing up to some formidable competition. Google is responsible for our favourite mid-range phone of 2023, the Pixel 7a, though Samsung is also right in the mix with the Galaxy A54 5G. The Honor 90 offers a particularly classy alternative, while the Poco F5 aims to provide flat-out performance above all else.

Xperia phones for music and movie Sony has announced two new Xperia phones for music and movie

Moving onto the display, the Xperia uses an OLED panel with a 1080p resolution, a pixel density of 449, and a 60Hz refresh rate. It supports HDR and reaches a maximum of 624 nits peak brightness. For the money, this is an admirably specced screen, and it's specially impressive that it's an OLED. I don’t doubt that you’ll be able to get some great shots via the camera app’s manual controls with enough effort. But when outside video on a summer’s day came out looking noisy, processed, and bumpy, there are doubts that the vast majority of casual snappers will feel a little burned by Sony’s usually solid reputation in the photography field. Performance The Sony Xperia 10 V may not be able to compete in terms of sheer spec compared to the flagship Xperia 1 V, but there is one area that it comes out on top; design. More specifically, weight.

What’s new about the Sony Xperia 10 V?

One improvement over last year’s design is the inclusion of dual front-facing stereo speakers, which goes some way to justifying those chunky top and bottom bezels. They’re not particularly loud or punchy, however, and I found that I needed to crank them up to around the halfway mark in normal YouTube video-watching scenarios. The main camera has received an upgrade, with Sony swapping out the 1/2.8in 12MP sensor of the Xperia 10 IV for a larger, more pixel-dense 1/2in 48MP sensor. You get the same pair of 8MP sensors for ultrawide and 2x telephoto shots as last year, however.
