If you zoom in on the cap's strap, the shirt seams or the plastic clip on the dog's collar I can clearly see more detail on the 40-150mm f2.8. Speaking of manual focus, it works in a focus-by-wire fashion. This should not put you off using it as it feels pretty natural in use, and actually enables the camera to display a magnified view of the subject automatically, i.e. without your having to press a dedicated button or enter the menu. The focus ring is slim but is adequate for the job.

At the 150mm end, the angle of view narrows to 8.2°, equivalent to that of a 300mm lens mounted to a 35mm full-frame camera. In the comparison with the Lumix lens, I did some basic test shots but I think that images taken in real situations, like the ones you’ll see below, are actually more interesting to share. For me, that is worse than doing nothing at all as it is selling their brand on a lie.If I had a G9, I would definitely lean towards the PL50-200mm, if only for the improvements in DFD autofocus and Dual IS image stabilization, as well as the smaller and lighter form factor (which is really quite remarkable, I think). I've had a bit more play-time with my new MC-20. It was a brighter day and I got a few more acceptable test shots. That said, the keeper ratio was still lower than I expected and I think there will be a learning curve to get more out of it. It's still early days, though I have a feeling it was easier to get sharp shots out of my P100-300 when the AF played ball. Maybe that is down to OIS vs IBIS at 300mm? Of course, it might just be that I've forgotten how many poor 100-300 shots I deleted. I want to know the positive or negative impact of the item I am buying. Has the CO2 production been offset? Is it made in a country with a good human rights record? Does a proportion of the profits go to good causes? Do they promote equality? There is of course an interesting alternative for those who don’t need that extra 50mm reach and want a smaller lens that won’t unbalance the kit too much: the Lumix 35-100mm f/2.8. And this is another positive aspect about the new zoom: Olympus has released something different from everything else out there to bring the MFT system a step closer to completion.

There isn’t much else to say in conclusion except that which I said at the start: the 40-150mm is a wonderful lens. Along with having great optical performance and a versatile zoom range, it is also an important step forward for a system that is becoming more and more mature and complete with solutions that can suit amateurs, enthusiasts and professional photographers. Introduction
The minimum focus distance of 0.9m is quite close for a lens with an angle of view equivalent to a 300mm lens - ISO200, 1/250, f/5.6, 150mm (35mm equiv – 300mm) This is huge differential that makes most sharpness tests moot because they are done either in the laboratory, indoors or ultra low distances, instead in purposed distances. Alone close-focusing can be softer than far focusing as the lenses focal length and sharpness is optimized for infinity (macro for 1:1). The Olympus M.ZUIKO Digital 40-150mm f/4-5.6 ED has a plastic mount that raises some questions as to its longevity, but contributes to the extremely light weight of the lens. Doing a common 8x10" prints and it renders lenses like 300mm f/4 moot by sharpness compared to 75-300mm @ 300mm as you are wasting resolution benefit in small print. The lens gives excellent results in terms of sharpness, bokeh and versatility. It is certainly the biggest lens for MFT but don’t be fooled by its appearance. It is actually not that big for what it delivers.
