About this deal

Power and corruption – The novel examines how abuse of power may lead to ethically questionable decisions being made by individuals. It highlights how important transparency and accountability are to sound government. Note: the one thing I did like about Ophelia is that I believe she is asexual, as she mentions more than once that she’s never felt sexual attraction before. And for that, I commend the author. Plain-spoken, headstrong Ophelia cares little about appearances. Her ability to read the past of objects is unmatched in all of Anima and, what’s more, she possesses the ability to travel through mirrors, a skill passed down to her from previous generations. Her idyllic life is disrupted, however, when she is promised in marriage to Thorn, a taciturn and influential member of a distant clan. Ophelia must leave all she knows behind and follow her fiancé to Citaceleste, the capital of a cold, icy ark known as the Pole, where danger lurks around every corner and nobody can be trusted. There, in the presence of her inscrutable future husband, Ophelia slowly realizes that she is a pawn in a political game that will have far-reaching ramifications not only for her but for her entire world. And the one character I did like? It was Ophelia’s scarf. Yes, you read that right. I loved her scarf, which is alive and has a mind of it’s own. I wanted to read that story, about Ophelia and her scarf! Farouk –The head of the Farouk family and the wealthiest and strongest man with aspirations to control the Arks is Farouk.

I read the book in two days (in my mother tongue) and rushed to the online store to buy the second one in english, as it is not translated in my idiom yet: so I would say, for me, the pacing worked very well. She also learns that she is a pawn in a larger game and that other factions place a great value on her ability to see into the history of objects. Ophelia must navigate this dangerous world, all while keeping her true motives hidden from those around her. Ophelia is a hero for the ages, and I hope this series becomes the next big one that grabs the imaginations of young adults and adults alike.”The main character of Christelle Dabos’ young adult fantasy novel “A Winter’s Promise” is Ophelia, a member of the Anima clan with the power to learn an object’s history just by touching it. At first she found the writing to be an escape, then found that it was helping her to reconstruct herself. As she kept going, she discovered her ‘second nature’. She also joined an online author community called Silver Plume that gave her encouragement. They were so supportive that she decided to take up her first challenge in literature, to enter a contest for youth novels written for the first time and did quite well!

The Mirror Visitor

Berenilde – Thorn’s aunt, she is a calculating and ambitious woman who seeks to manipulate Ophelia to further her own agenda.Ophelia and Thorn eventually fall in love, but their relationship is complicated by the fact that they are from different Arkans. Ophelia is also struggling to come to terms with the fact that she is a Reader, and that she has the power to read people’s minds. Lose yourself in the world of the arks and in the company of an unforgettable character in this French runaway hit by debut author Christelle Dabos. A Winter’s Promise, the first installment in the Mirror Visitor Quartet, introduces readers to a remarkable heroine and to the richly imagined universe of the arks: floating celestial islands governed by the spirits of immortal ancestors. Ophelia, a mix of awkward misfit and misunderstood genius, possesses two special gifts: an unrivaled talent for reading the past of objects and the ability to travel through mirrors. Her peaceful existence on the ark of Anima is interrupted when she is promised in marriage to Thorn, a taciturn and influential member of a powerful clan from a distant ark, the cold and icy Pole. Ophelia must follow her fiancé to the towering city of Citaceleste, where nobody can be trusted. There, in the company of her inscrutable future husband, Ophelia slowly realizes that she is a pawn in a political game that will have far-reaching ramifications not only for her but for her entire world. Ophelia’s role is to spy on the other Arks for Thorn’s family and discover what they are keeping secret. In an effort to protect her own family and find out the truth about her new spouse, she unwillingly agrees to the duty, but she subsequently regrets it.
