Most Asterix fans will agree that the Goscinny era is the franchise’s strongest. Uderzo’s first books after Goscinny’s sudden passing are enjoyable, but his later efforts are problematic. The recent efforts from Jean-Yves Ferri and Didier Conrad are worthy – a rebound from Uderzo’s later albums, but not as strong as Goscinny’s best. The Gaulish warrior Asterix has been a French institution since he first appeared in 1961’s Asterix the Gaul. He’s accompanied by his inseparable friend Obelix and aided by the druid Getafix’s magic potion that gives superhuman strength. His cunning defends his Gaulish village from Romans, Vikings, and even aliens. After the death of Goscinny, Uderzo continued the series by himself, writing his own stories on subjects such as feminism and aliens, with travels to India and Atlantis.

Obelix decides to join a chariot race across the homeland of the Romans, Italy, accompanied by Asterix and Dogmatix. The race takes them to Venexia, Florencia, Neapolis, Sena Julia and other locations.The Romans conspire with a Roman-friendly Gaulish village to declare a ritual winner-takes-all fight between village chiefs. A blow from one of Obelix's menhirs causes Getafix to lose his memory, leaving the Gauls without magic potion. The fight parodies professional boxing. A poisoned Roman tax inspector is given sanctuary in the village. Asterix and Obelix are sent to Switzerland to recover edelweiss, which is needed to cure him.

In November 2019 it was announced that the American publisher Papercutz would take over the American licence for Asterix and that it would begin to reprint all of its stories in an Omnibus series beginning in 2020. Future volumes were said to be planned for release at a pace of four volumes per year. [1] The first two volumes were initially planned to be released simultaneously on May 19, 2020. [2] However, due to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, the release date was pushed forward to July of the same year. [3] The first volume Asterix Omnibus Vol. 1 was finally launched for the United States market on July 14, 2020, with a print run of 20,000 hardcover copies plus an additional 50,000 softcover copies. [4] Format [ edit ] A troublemaker is brought to Caesar in Rome; he was to be executed in the Circus Maximus, but is so conniving that the lions ate each other instead. Caesar sends him to the Gaulish village in an attempt to destroy unity. Asterix and Obelix need to return a hostage to a lone village in Spain that still holds out against the Roman invaders. Pepe is one of the series’ most memorable characters, with his habit of holding his breath. Obelix takes up Spanish dancing (“¡Olé!”) and Asterix takes up bull-fighting. It was fast-moving enough to entertain me as a kid, but in hindsight it marks the start of an era where Uderzo is out of new ideas for stories and relies on novelty to drive the series. Some characters during the translation had their names changed: the most apparent one is the druid Getafix which now is named Panoramix. Minor characters, such as the odd roman och other ones with lesser parts of the stories have also been subjects to change mainly due to updates on the names in regards of getting their puns to fit better to modern american readers. With an eclectic group of foreigners, they are sent to North Africa to fight the traitor Scipio.
