About this deal

I’d recommend Catan as an alternative to Calico for anyone who wants a family board game but isn’t a massive fan of cats (or quilts!). In this addictive game, trade, build, and settle on the island of Catan as you control your own civilization and spread across the board. Along with adding animals to your party, interact with cats and other animals by petting and playing! Some of the animal interactions in Calico include playing with toys, dancing, cuddling, petting, carrying, lounging with, and pampering. Because this is a prototype I can’t comment on these specific components, but I can tell you how hard the team worked to produce the copy that I was given to review. Let me just share some of their effort with you.

The game ends when the last player has placed their final tile. Then it’s time to score. And, in case you forget which features give you points, there’s a cute little score pad inside to help you tot up your totals for Design goals, cats, and buttons! It’s a great family board game that’s likely to appeal to cat lovers and art and craft enthusiasts alike. If you can also (or alternatively) connect at least three patches of the same colour, you can sew (add) a colour co-ordinated button onto any one of those matching patches which is worth 3 points at end game. Indeed, get a button of each of the six available colours and the rainbow bonus token is yours! In Quilts & Cats of Calico, cats are active during your games. Sometimes minding their own business, and other times coming to you and your quilt. They will lazily observe the board, romp and run around, and sometimes fall into a blissful nap. They are cats, you never know. You can interact with them during the game, pet them, and shoo them away when they get in the way.

Deep Dive

A button is worth three points. Once you have formed a group, you can take a button token and place it onto your quilt on the group that was most recently formed. scenarios in total, they specify a number of additional requirements when setting up and playing the game. Going from easy to hard, each one shows which design goals and cat scoring tiles to use. Not only that, however, but they also show which type of cats and buttons you need to have added to your quit, and whether those goals have to be met using colour, pattern, or both! And if that’s not enough, every one has a minimum score to achieve! I need to lie down after that! Or I would, if my Calico quilt wasn’t so poorly crafted! Haha The player will encounter many animals in the world of Calico. Once befriended, you can name them, add them to your party, or send them to their new home at the café. Animals in your party will follow you everywhere you go and listen to your commands. The animals in your café will relax and play with any customers that pop in for a visit. NB: for added competition, we tend to select 3 at random and then have everybody place the same ones in the same slots on their own boards). Each player has the same set of 6 different goal tiles (of which only three are used per game), color-coded to match their player board. Each goal tile offers two scoring opportunities: matching colors or patterns, with the face of each goal tile indicating the requirements. For example, the AA-BB-CC goal tile requires that players have only three different colors, or three different patterns, directly adjacent to the goal tile. If they accomplish that, they’ll earn 7 points for either. If however they’re fortunate enough to match both color and patterns, they’ll earn 11 points instead. Calico offers 20 different combinations of goal tiles giving games a different feel based on the specific combos.

In Quilts & Cats of Calico, based on the board game Calico, you will be immersed in a warm, cozy world full of cuddly cats. Here the quilt bends under the weight of their paws and loud purring can be heard. It's a world full of patterns and designs awaiting the master quilt maker. The lower blue points just need colour or pattern. So in the AA-BB-CC example, so long as you have e.g. 2 blue + 2 yellow + 2 green patches or 2 stripes + 2 spots + 2 ferns, you’ll have achieved that objective and will score 7 points at end game! Button It, Kitty Moreover, if you can place tiles in a way that satisfies both pattern and colour around a particular goal, you’ll be squaring up to stitch up your opponents when it comes to final scoring as the hefty yellow point values become yours for the taking! Buttons, Bags, and Boards I’ll be honest: when I first looked at Calico I wasn’t sure what to expect. The soft colors and sun-drenched artwork from Beth Sobel mellowed me out, and the theme teased me into thinking this was going to be just another pretty face. But Calico turned out to be anything but relaxing; let me tell you that this kitty has claws. Like Scarabya and NMBR 9, Calico is largely a solitaire tile-laying game with very little in the way of player interaction. Observant players might be able to seize opportunities to claim tiles which are beneficial to their opponents, but that’s about it.Cascadia is a puzzly tile-laying game featuring the habitats and wildlife of the Pacific Northwest! In Cascadia, players take turns building their terrain and populating it with wildlife. Players must create a diverse and harmonious ecosystem - each animal species has a different spatial preference and each habitat must be placed to reduce fragmentation and create wildlife corridors. Beth Sobel’s illustrations are stunning, steeped with a level of detail that makes the feline friends – Coconut, Leo, Millie, and the rest of the gang – even more realistic. You’ll definitely want them on your quilt, that’s for sure! But how do you attract them? Read on to find out. The Aim of the Game Now, there is a specific “Beginner Set up” in the rulebook but the only real difference there is that it specifies which Cats and Design Goal tiles to use (and where to place them). So we are going to jump into a regular game so you can hit the ground running! You make a rainbow button by sewing at least one button of each color onto your quilt. This is also worth three points. End of the Game

Players work on building their beautiful quilts in ways which achieve victory points. For example, if by placing a tile, a player is able to connect at least three patches of the same colour, they can sew a colour co-ordinated button onto any one of those matching patches and that is worth 3 points at the end of the game. Indeed, get a button of each of the six available colours and the rainbow bonus token is yours! Point City takes the same simple concept of drafting cards and building the best combinations and adds new layers of resource management and engine building to the mix - making the game easy to learn, but challenging for everyone! If you want a game with a high degree of interactivity, I will say now that Calico is not it. The most you do is draft from the same “market” of tiles, but in the five or so games I’ve played it’s never worth it to “hate draft” because you always have to place the tiles you take, and each tile is so impactful. You’ll only get to place 22 tiles through the game to maximise your score and reach your goals. The set-up is delightfully simple and the form factor is really compact. Calico is a puzzly tile-laying game of quilts and cats. In Calico, players compete to sew the coziest quilt as they collect and place patches of different colors and patterns. Each quilt has a particular pattern that must be followed, and players are also trying to create color and pattern combinations that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also able to attract the cuddliest cats! Calico is surprisingly challenging as players are constantly forced to think along the parallel axes of color and pattern. Before my first game, looking at the player board with only the goal tiles to guide me, I assumed that I would easily get all of the goal tiles, and potentially at least one double goal. It's Calico time... Okay, so you’ve got your cat and you’ve got your quilt. But how do you turn those beauties into points? Well, have no fear for I am here to show you how to play the purrrrrfectly puzzly Calico! Sewing Up Possibly one of the most wholesome board games to have ever been created, Calico combines the art of quilt designing with adorable cats. So whether you have a feline friend at home or wish that you did, it’s the perfect game for cat lovers. VERDANT is a puzzly spatial board game for 1 to 5 players. You take on the role of a houseplant enthusiast trying to create the coziest interior space by collecting and arranging houseplants and other objects within your home. You must position your plants so that they are provided the most suitable light conditions and take care of them to create the most verdant collection. Each turn, you will select an adjacent pair of a card and token, and use those items to build an ever-expanding tableau of cards - your home. You will need to keep various objectives in mind as you attempt to increase plant verdancy by making spatial matches and using item tokens to take various nurture actions. You will also build your ‘green thumb’ skills allowing you to take additional actions to take care of your plants and create the coziest space!

Whether you utilize the correct size or shape, this must be done using one of their two preferred patterns. The small button and corresponding cat tokens are placed within easy reach and each player takes two coloured patch tiles from the communal bag into their hand. Finally, three more patch tiles are removed from the bag and placed in the central area between the boards to make up the draw pile. And that’s it; it’s sewing time! Through two rounds (twilight and moonlight) players compete to collect the strongest sets of magical items like firebird feathers, creature skulls, glowing mushrooms, mysterious eggs, and rare herbs. These items have value when collected in specific sets, but can also be combined to fulfill recipes needed for concoctions, scoring you even more prestige! In addition to all of this, the game comes with an easy-to-read instruction booklet that not only sets out the rules of the game but also includes information about the history of each cat that inspired the game’s creator. Similarly, if your patch placements have connected a number of tiles of the same pattern in a configuration that satisfies one of those hard to please Cats, you can add the corresponding cat token onto your quilt and you’ll score the relevant number of victory points shown on the cat at end game.A game for 1 – 4 players, Calico is very simple to set up. In a normal multiplayer game, each player receives a unique colour coded player board (quilt) and a corresponding set of six goal tiles, four of which are chosen at random. Out of those four, three are then placed on the marked spaces and form a player’s personal objectives for the game. Fit to Print is a puzzly tile-laying game about breaking news, designed by Peter McPherson and set in a charming woodland world created by Ian O’Toole!
