About this deal

Relaxation and stress relief: Enjoying a glass of plum wine in moderation can provide a sense of relaxation and may help alleviate stress. The pleasant flavors and aromas can contribute to a soothing and enjoyable experience. There are over a hundred selections of Japanese plum wines you can enjoy when you visit Shibuya or Tokyo. Having a variety of choices means you can enjoy what your heart desires – but there are some specific Japanese plum wines we’d recommend trying if you have the chance. Choya Ume Blanc This restaurant is pretty close to Ueno station. You might not have heard of this place for Umeshu experience, primarily because they are a buffet restaurant. But they are really heavy on serving healthy food, so if you enjoy vegetarian food, you can get lots of veggie dishes.

This is a Japanese specialty that is enjoyed best in winter months. Mix warm water with Umeshu in the ratio of 1:1 and you have a handy, delicious drink to sip by the fireplace. You can drink them with ice, or use them at normal temperature. You can even warm them up if you want to drink it in the winter months. You might believe the flowering trees to be cherry blossoms but it is actually the plum blossom that graces the landscape beginning in mid-February, giving new hope and life after a long winter. Although they might look alike, the plum blossom is very different from the popular sakura in petal count, colors and fragrance. Also, the trees produces one of their most loved specialty foods—ume (梅)—the key ingredient of umeshu. The level of alcohol remaining in the final product depends to an extent on the type of alcohol used to produce the drink. When umeshu is made from shochu, which is the most common base, the alcohol present in the umeshu can be as high as 20%. Umeshu made from ume soaked in sake can have an alcohol percentage as low as 9%. (This is the type Tippsy carries.) Most beer falls below this range, while most wines fall within this range. Distilled spirits like whiskey and vodka are much higher in alcohol than plum wine. Is plum wine healthy? Health benefits of plum wine Before sake, I would’ve immediately reached for white wine and it would’ve been fine, but this sake was top-notch; more than “food friendly,” it truly elevated the dish as the plum tones complemented the sherry/soy sauce umami flavors. Umeshu strictly translated is “ume alcohol.” The “shu” part of umeshu can refer to any type of alcohol, from whisky to sake to wine, so importers and marketers settled on the use of “wine” in its place — perhaps to convey the fruity flavor that is so much a part of what makes it enjoyable. The reason that umeshu is not plum wine is that wine is fermented, and umeshu is not strictly a fermented beverage. It has the most in common with liqueurs, in that it is flavored with fruit (ume) and has an alcohol base, as well as prominent sweetness as part of its flavor profile. Umeshu is made in Japan from various alcohol bases, unripened ume (Prunus mume) and, usually, sugar. Very few are made through the fermentation of ume juice, however one example is Hakutsuru “Plum Wine.”Many people don’t realize that Umeshu is made from two words. “Ume” stands for fruit, while “Shu” is a Japanese word for liquor. In most cases, Umeshu is translated as plum wine. But that is not the most proper translation as Ume is a particular fruit tree known as Prunus Mume. It is related to both plum and apricot, but it is not the same. Therefore, the best translation is Ume liquor. #6 Umeshu is more than just a beverage Drinking moderate amounts of wine can bring a ton of health benefits. That’s also the case with Umeshu. Umeshu is known to provide relief from exhaustion and constipation. It contains plenty of calcium and minerals. Umeshu prevents diarrhea and is very stimulative for your appetite. So you get a bit tipsy and healthier, all in one. #3 Markets sell two types of Umeshu You can drink it without mixing anything because it tastes so unique. But if you like your wine chilled, you can pair it with some ice. The alcohol content of the drink is quite high at 12%, so keep that in mind when you start a bottle.

Moonstone “Plum” is one of just three varieties of fruit-flavored junmai ginjo sake made in the Oregon production center of SakéOne, where they have been brewing sake since 1997. Their clean and sturdy sake serves as the base for a number of novel fruit-infused brews, which also include “Asian Pear” and “Coconut Lemongrass.” Their “Plum” variety carries a hint of almond on the nose, and with only 7% ABV, you can have a bottle to yourself and live to tell the tale. Embrace the variety and the seasons Production method: Plum wines can be made through different processes, such as fermentation or maceration. Each method may yield distinct characteristics. Read the product description or label to understand the production method and choose the one that appeals to you. This is not quite the same as the usual umeshu that you can find anywhere. While regular Umeshu is made by soaking ume plums in shochu, Suiryu is made by soaking the ume plums in Japanese Sake. Because of this, the end product is significantly more mellow and less tart than usual umeshu products. Depending on the variety of the wine you are buying, you can get other flavors like sake, rice, or grape as well. You can drink it with pudding, or any kind of other dessert sweets. 5. Kikkoman Plum Wine If you have bought a bottle already, and don’t know what to do with it, here are a few recipes you can try. The Umeshu differs from normal wines because they can be taken drunk at different temperatures. But the best part of the Myojo experience for Umeshu lovers is their drink-all-you-can offer for 1500 Yen, and it lasts for a whole 100 minutes. In this time, you can have your fill of Umeshu drinks and decide which one suits your taste best, so you can buy your bottle later on.

Variations

As the name suggests, plum wine is traditionally made from Japanese Ume plums fermented in sugar and yeast. The taste of Suntory Plum Wine is smooth and refreshing. The wine offers a pleasant sweetness that is not overpowering, allowing the natural flavors of the plums to shine through. There’s no doubt that many of us who’ve never tried sake are still familiar with Kikkoman, the global producer and distributor of products across the spectrum of Asian cuisine. It makes sense, then, that they would also have an umeshu product as well. Their 12.5% ABV plum wine is rich and sweet, and has probably been the first glass of umeshu for many around the world. Hakutsuru Brewing Company Sui-Umeshu (すいうめ酒) is made by Yoshimura Hideo Shoten(𠮷村秀雄商店) which is a brewery established in Wakayama prefecture in 1914. Similar to the last umeshu on this list, this is also a unique Japanese plum wine.
