About this deal

Water Resistant - Suitable for daily use. Splash/rain resistant. Not available for showering, bathing, swimming, snorkelling, diving, fishing, and water related works. I think you have to approach a piece like this with a different mindset. It’s not the “daily watch” most consumers are looking for. Its avant-garde styling isn’t necessarily versatile or practical. Trying to use the Blue Planet as a practical watch will likely end in frustration.

U-Series Blue Planet GPHG Mechanical Watch - CIGA Design

The Blue Planet comes in two versions, stainless steel and titanium. Here we’ll be looking at the titanium. Right off the bat, I think the product photos are misleading. A feminine evolution inspired by the CIGA Design Blue Planet, the Challenge Watch Prize Winner of 2021 GPHG

CIGA Design U Series “Blue Planet” Review

It’s time to rethink Chinese watches. There is still a cloud that hangs over watches from China, a cloud of dismissive judgment that automatically assumes that if it’s (openly) made in China, it can’t be of any merit. The irony, of course, is that many of the high-end brands we hold dear outsource some or most of their manufacturing to the country. But more and more, Chinese brands are proving those assumptions wrong and demonstrating that the country has horological prowess beyond shadow manufacturing. In fact, brands like CIGA Design are winning awards–and not just participation ribbons. For the incredibly novel CIGA Design Blue Planet watch, the brand was the first Chinese winner of any award at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève—the Oscars of the watch world—beating out the likes of Oris and Doxa to take home the Challenge Award in 2021. Inspired by our responsibility to preserve the world around us, the Blue Planet doesn’t just impress with its three-dimensional representation of our planet—it presents a new way of displaying the time. CIGA, which stands for Chinese International Great Art, has won several design awards in their relatively short career. Looking at their catalog, they seem to have a penchant for skeletonized designs. Covered by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal that is bound to last long and reveals every detail on the dial. Origine e Riconoscimenti:** Anche se l'azienda è cinese, questo orologio è un prodotto di livello internazionale. La vittoria del Challenge Watch Prize del GPHG 2021 ne è una chiara testimonianza. This is why I believe it’s best suited for a specific buyer. One who loves the craft of watchmaking and is looking for something truly unique. If that’s you, then you probably already know if you want one or not.

CIGA Design Blue Planet - BEYOND THE DIAL Hands-On Review CIGA Design Blue Planet - BEYOND THE DIAL

The World on Your Wrist - Inspired by "Blue Marble" the first photograph of Earth as a whole taken from space in 1972. Micro-engraved the earth's terrain on the dial, showing natural elements such as land, mountains and oceans. Unique single pointer design, indicating the time in a way that simulates the rotation of the earth. Means to awaken people's awareness of protecting the earth's environment. There is a compass rose on the globe, nestled between Madagascar and Antarctica. The outer point is the arrow by which time is read. An automatic caliber unique to CIGA Design fully rotates the globe on the watch once every 12 hours, so that the compass points to the correct hour on the outermost ring. The outer hour ring does not move. The ring between it and the globe, however, does. This is the minute ring, and its rotation has been engineered so that the point on the globe always points to the correct minute. This setup causes the experience of initially setting the watch to be mildly disorienting in the best way. The globe spins and the minute ring flies by. Once the Blue Planet is wound and set though, the slowness of their rotation subdues the eccentricity. There are a few Chinese watch brands such as Seagull, Shanghai and Beijing that are known to watch enthusiasts and collectors. These brands have been producing quality watches with very affordable prices mainly for the domestic market. CIGA is certainly a newcomer with greater ambition, aspiring to follow the footsteps of Huawei and DJI (top drone maker) who are both headquartered in Shenzhen as well. The strong base of manufacturing know-how and supply chain, combined with cutting edge designs, have set up the brand for its future success. On the wrist, the Blue Planet wears wonderfully. The soft curve of the case and supple rubber strap definitely place it on the more comfortable end of the spectrum as watches go. The titanium case keeps the ensemble light enough, yet still substantial. And although the diameter is officially 46mm, with no lugs to speak of, the Blue Planet wears as well as any mid-size watch with a similar lug-to-lug measurement. I have a smaller wrist and didn’t experience any discomfort or overhang. How do you follow up on a hit release as a young watch brand? While established marques have a variety of lines and a rich heritage with which to build upon existing success, the “sophomore album” problem can be a major challenge for a newer watchmaker. This is especially true in the case of CIGA Design. Beyond the need to build upon the foundation of its award-winning core design, the brand has arguably taken up the mantle of delivering innovative Chinese horology to the masses, which only adds to the pressure on its current slate of releases. With this in mind, any follow-up to the 2021 release of the CIGA Design Blue Planet is bound to garner intense enthusiast scrutiny. Rather than resting on its laurels, the brand takes the GPHG-winning base model and adds a new layer of visual drama and material quality. The new CIGA Design Blue Planet – Gilding Version combines an impressively luxe feel with the same unique display as its predecessor, delivering what may well be the Chinese marque’s most compelling offering to date. The outer ring is stationary and displays the 12 hour layout, with each hour subdivided by 5 minute markers. The globe acts as a typical hour hand, rotating 30 degrees every hour.

CIGA Design Blue Planet - Fratello Watches Hands-On Review: The CIGA Design Blue Planet - Fratello Watches

The grooved ceramic crown ensures an added sense of wholeness and a smooth efficient winding. Watch Specification Readability became a breeze once I reoriented myself to the unique nature by which the Blue Planet tells time. The single pointer with the clearly notated hour and minute rings makes reading it easier than some more typical yet minimal watches. The crown is recessed into a cutaway in the case, and the underside of the crown hangs just below, giving you a spot to pop it out with a fingernail. The design of the crown is pretty unique as well. Pliable and fitting, anti-microbial and wear-resisting dial Integrated color and natural texture strap.

The New York Times The Chinese Watch Brand That Beat the Swiss - The New York Times

I think it would have been amazing if the designers were able to incorporate a moving seconds indicator into the dial somehow. StrapAttrazione & Percezione: Ricevo complimenti ovunque vada; l’orologio sembra costare molto di più di quanto effettivamente faccia. È il simbolo definitivo di eleganza e sofisticazione.
