About this deal

After the Second World War, Zino Davidoff decided to acquire a licence to produce his own series of cigars. [5] As he had discerning international customers, he named the various formats of this "Château" cigar series after famous Bordeaux vineyard estates. The first in the series was the "Château Latour" in 1946.

In 1970 the business was taken over by the Max Oettinger company, established in 1875 which had first imported Havana cigars into Europe of Havana cigars, but Zino Davidoff remained as ambassador. The company had been approached in 1968 by the state tobacco monopoly established in Cuba by Fidel Castro’s government, and terms were agreed on which Davidoff imported cigars made at the factory that produced those that Castro himself smoked. For some years this proved a profitable partnership and new lines and brands appeared year by year, but in 1989 the relationship with the monopoly broke down, and Davidoff cigars were thereafter sourced from the Dominican Republic. In 1991, the first Dominican-made Davidoff cigars were launched, continuing the product lines and cigar formats of their Cuban predecessors. With the move to the Dominican Republic, the Château series was renamed "Grand Cru", and the individual formats were numbered instead of carrying the names of vineyard estates. Wen CP, Chen T, Tsai YY, Tsai SP, Chung WS, Cheng TY, Levy DT, Hsu CC, Peterson R, Liu WY (June 2005). "Are marketing campaigns in Taiwan by foreign tobacco companies targeting young smokers?". Tobacco Control. 14 (Suppl 1): i38-44. doi: 10.1136/tc.2004.007971. PMC 1766177. PMID 15923447. Zino Davidoff, as a soft woody-amber fragrance with a predominance of the chocolate-powdery notes of patchouli, is surprisingly relevant today, although it was discontinued in 2013. At present, it would goseamlessly with the collection of aniche perfume house from Europewhose motto is 'soft, natural sexuality and a classic approach.' Give it a name like Lavender Patchouli or Patchouli Cashmere, and launch it! Maybe Teo Cabanel would name it Très Parisien. The cigar starts changing, growing milder, alongside the appearance of an enjoyable sweetness. The aroma becomes milder and flavours of roasted coffee beans and dark, bitter chocolate make themselves known. The cigar develops a creaminess at the end of the second third. The cigar keeps building on the second third, delivering growing excitement and balance thus becoming the kind of smoking experience that only Davidoff can create. Time beautifully filled!

After the first chypre fragrance, it would have been logical for the brand to move towards fougère compositions, following Azzaro Pour Homme, or to create a real big tobacco fragrance that highlights the brand's origins. I'd love a Davidoff perfume of cigar or tobacco leaves! But Davidoff has not chosen that path, instead ending up in a blue sea of freshness with their hit fragrance Cool Water in the late eighties. In 1985, the first line of Davidoff ties was launched, and the first Davidoff watch came to the market. [17] In 1986, the Davidoff cognac license started. In 1987, the first collection of Davidoff leather goods was launched. In 1988, the Davidoff eyewear license started. It paired well, in my humble opinion at least, with both but more with the Islay. It think would pair very well with a good coffee as well. Lovely, creamy white smoke. A solid, flawless burn and ash that required no touch ups. Rich flavours of dark chocolate, coffee and salted nuts sensitise the palette and a hint of pepper and spices on the retrohale, but nowhere near being a pepper bomb. Only criticism is that the draw was a little restrictive initially but still gave you what you needed. Loosened up near the end of the first third though to a more comfortable draw.

Basenotes

The brand Davidoff is licensed to French-American company Coty, Inc. for the fragrances business, [7] to Menrad for the eyewear business, [8] to German coffee chain Tchibo for the coffee business, [9] and to Thomas Hine & Co. for the cognac business. [10] History [ edit ] Davidoff Café bottle In 1967, Zino Davidoff was approached by Cubatabaco, Cuba's state tobacco monopoly, about creating a line of cigars carrying the "Davidoff" name. The cigars were rolled in the newly established El Laguito factory in Havana, which had been established to roll Cuban President Fidel Castro's own personal cigars, named Cohíba.

Reviews

Smoking time is said to be between 50-60min. I made mine last 1 hour and 45mins, leaving just about 1cm left and not once did it go out

In 1971, the Davidoff "Mini Cigarillos" (short fillers made of 100% tobacco) and, in 1972, the first Davidoff pipe tobaccos were released. As of 1975, the cigars of the Château series were delivered in cabinets bearing the Davidoff logo. Wakefield, Steve. "Very Zino – the New Luxury Brand from Davidoff". Classicdriver.com . Retrieved 9 July 2015. In 1924 Zino Davidoff travelled in Argentina, Brazil and Cuba, where he spent two years gaining experience of the cigar trade. He returned to Switzerland taking control of the family shop about 1930. He is credited with inventing a desktop humidifier in which cigars could be kept at the same degree of humidity and temperature as in Cuba. His business expanded during the Second World War where, when trade of all kinds was disrupted, he provided one of the few channels through which leaders on both sides of the conflict could obtain quality cigars.Zino Davidoff established himself as one of Europe’s principal suppliers of cigars, and his name remains one of the most powerful brands in the field of luxury products. He was born to a Jewish family in Novhorod-Siverskyi, which in 1906 was part of the Russian Empire but is now in Ukraine. His father had a tobacco business in Kiev but in 1911 the family migrated to Geneva, where they opened a small tobacco shop. How this is still being made I do not know. This could just as easily have been launched in 1886 vs. 1986, given how far it is from modern fragrance sensibilities. But what a rich experience! The balsam and strange overripe brew of florals drying down to one of the best patchoulis ever. Stands up straight, has great manners, and then winks at you with just a hint of lasciviousness. Delicious! According to Edward Simon, the chief marketing officer at Oettinger Davidoff AG, the inspiration behind the new Zino brand comes from individuals who embrace a lifestyle and mindset centred around experiences, open-mindedness, and an insatiable curiosity.
