About this deal

And this expression is exactly what I’m talking about. This dram is a really lovely sip. The use of Plantation XO rum casks that previously held Cognac makes for a wholly unique experience in bourbon that’s worth every cent. Blanton’s Buffalo Trace The Bottled-in-Bond of 1897 is one of the highest standards regarding the quality of distilled spirits, and it is meant to protect consumers from buying poor-quality whiskeys [ 1]. While it has the traditional bourbon notes of toasty oak and vanilla on the nose, there is an element of corn syrup floating around. The nose is very one-dimensional and not layered or complex. Wright Thompson (2020). Pappyland: A Story of Family, Fine Bourbon, and the Things That Last. Penguin Press. ISBN 978-0-7352-2125-3. Another fun side-by-side bourbon comparison, and this time I am looking at the Evan Williams vs Jim Beam bourbon whiskey. As part of my comparison series, I put these two well know budget brands next to each other so you can make an informed buying decision. Evan Williams Bottled in Bond doesn’t normally need all of that exposition behind it. It’s a bourbon that many of my bourbon drinking friends associate with an easy drinker for a great price. Today, the stills of the Heaven Hill distillery stand proud in downtown Louisville, producing a modest one barrel a day. Why only one barrel? Because Heaven Hill demands a certain level of quality control and care, so only one barrel can be made at a time. Yup. Just. One. At. A. Time.Small Batch: A subjective term signaling a bourbon made using a select number of barrels or recipes in a blended bottling. Evan Williams Honey Bourbon consists of a traditional mash bill profile, with its ingredients by percentage being 78% corn, 12% malted barley, and 10% rye. The bottle design is great, and the branding of the whiskey is definitely on point with a very zen-like aesthetic. The bottle alone is a fantastic conversation piece, especially when guests come over and notice your collection. Palate: My initial impression is that this doesn’t taste a day over 5 years old. The graininess I find is pretty apparent. There is enough sweetness to make me not mind, but this isn’t going to blow away your expectations. In 1795 he founded Jim Beam and used his excess grain to distil whiskey. He began selling it under the name of Old Jake Beam, and in 1820 his son David began managing the distillery. The distillery and brand grew from strength to strength. In 2014, Suntory Holdings acquired Jim Beam to create Beam Suntory. Angel’s Envy does some great work in aging whiskey. Many would argue — myself included — that this expression isn’t the best example of that work. For me, it’s too sweet. Verging on high-fructose pancake syrup. If that’s what you dig in bourbon, please don’t let me stop you from loving this. Still, I find their more adventurous and refined expressions to be what people are really talking about when they name drop this brand. In 2020, with more expressions on the shelf than ever, there are a lot of bourbons competing for your attention. And yes, some of them seem to get a little too much shine. Take a close look at the Bourbon in your Glass and you’ll notice “distinctive flavor notes” like caramel, cold brew coffee, dark chocolate, and citrus. I think the nose is a lot more inviting in comparison to their Single Barrel counterpart which can be a bit sharp from the rye. Although the world’s whisk(e)y boom has brought more choices than enthusiasts have ever had, the heightened demand has also led some prices to rise. It’s a fundamental market mechanism taught in macroeconomics: when supply and demand are out of balance, prices will change until the balance is restored. This is a cool looking bottle with very fine bourbon inside of it. But when it comes to Buffalo Trace, there are so, so many great bottles to choose from that are, frankly, cheaper than this. In the end, it kind of feels like you’re paying a premium to collect little horses for behind your bar. It is a unique bourbon because it is pulled out from less than two hundred barrels and is well-aged for bold character and special tasting notes. The Jim Beam was less bourbon’y, with the oak and vanilla notes being less prominent. However, the sweetness was more caramel, and the taste was a bit more complex. It also had a bit more of a pepper bite.

This review has been a long time coming though. How exactly does Evan Williams BiB taste by itself? Let’s find out. I sampled this neat in a glencairn. Moreso, we like the sweet oak finish. 3. Evan Williams 1783 Small Batch There are some tradeoffs though. Small Batch is a bit sweeter and covers up the youthful grainy notes much better. That may be because it has older barrels dumped into it since it doesn’t have to follow the bottled in bond rules of being the product of one distillation season.
