The Pixel Watch is petite and comfortable, has annoyingly short battery life and lands about a year late. In the time it has taken Google to make a watch from this new era of Wear OS, Samsung has released two generations of smartwatch. There isn’t a great wealth of Pixel Watch straps to choose from right now, but that can be leveled up with case strap adapters that open up the more commonly used 20mm strap size. The usage of a slide-in proprietary mechanism means that you’ll need to do this to use your existing watch straps and bands. It’s certainly a looker, and not too heavy at 64g including the strap. While I was initially surprised to find the Pixel Watch is more than 1.5x the weight of the Fitbit Versa 4, the Pixel Watch does have a lovely habit of disappearing on your wrist. The rear design likely helps with this: it’s another smooth dome of glass, with no perceptible contours between the metallic sections surrounding the heart rate sensor and the rest of the watch. What promised to be a Wear OS renaissance has run low on momentum, but the Pixel Watch remains a pretty, if slightly pricey, alternative to the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5. Third-party Pixel Watch straps are few and far between. Because of the quality and consistency issues, at least for a little while longer, it’s hard for us to wholeheartedly recommend unofficial watch straps for the new wearable. The Pixel Watch is as smooth and sleek as smartwatches get, but this style isn’t rugged. It leaves the display glass vulnerable and i’ve already managed to put a series of light scratches on its surface, with no memory of any particular incident that might have caused them. That watch comes in two sizes, unlike the Pixel Watch, which is around 41mm across. The larger Galaxy Watch 5 is rated for almost double the battery life of the Pixel, too, and also has a body composition feature. This estimates your body fat percentage. However, the watches are otherwise fairly similar. Lets you leave your phone at home and still make calls and use apps with your watch. The Pixel Watch has 41 exercise modes, just like the Versa 4, and there’s nothing too interesting going on here. There’s no rep counter in the weightlifting mode, for instance, and while the Golf mode records your location, it doesn’t offer course maps and info like Garmin’s watches. Specialist and trendy pursuits like paddle boarding are here, but functionally they aren’t all that different to a handful of other modes. Assistant feels fast and responsive on the Pixel Watch, and there’s an on-board speaker to read out any responses it provides. Fix issues with LTE activation Curved screens are the bane of cheap screen protectors, and that is certainly true of the Pixel Watch. While the design looks gorgeous, the pebble shape means that there is a sizable portion of the chassis that is exposed to use and abuse day-in-day-out. What’s more annoying is those good screen protectors are hard to come by. If you want full protection and don’t mind added bulk, then Ringke makes a solid clip-on case, but it does detract a little from the svelte curves of the Pixel Watch. I’ve tested a few and most are in a word: terrible. While the adapters I recommend are not 100% perfect, I think they are pretty solid and make it easier for you to use more standard watch straps and accessories with your Pixel Watch. You may need to play around with your existing straps though. Due to the smaller size of the Pixel Watch chassis, I’ve found that sometimes bands can look a little out of place. This is a super cheap way to just add more “unofficial” Pixel Watch accessories to your daily lineup, and one that I do recommend if you can’t stomach the high official strap prices. The Pixel Watch has a decent spread of health and fitness sensors. Beyond the essentials of GPS and an optical heart rate sensor array, we get SpO2 (not enabled at launch), an altimeter for counting the stairs you climb, a compass and what Google calls a “Multipurpose electrical sensor”.

Lovely stuff indeed.Google promised a wealth of official Pixel Watch accessories, but there could be a few more in our opinion. Third-party accessory makers haven’t yet made a killer cheap alternative at this stage either. For that reason, although Google’s own watch straps are expensive, they are still the best option for most people.
