About this deal

We also consulted with experts for safety cues and buying advice for adjustable dumbbells. The experts we spoke to included: We loved how grippy the pair was with dry hands, but did notice some slipping when performing exercises with wet hands. When dropped on gym flooring, the dumbbells remained completely intact with no scratches. And dropping them on concrete resulted in only minor scratches with no broken or chipped parts. We think that this pair offers reliable durability, making them well worth the investment. Since the handle is in the middle of the dumbbell and is surrounded by the pinned weight, it does have a few limitations. For example, you won't be able to do certain exercises such as the dumbbell pull-over for the lats and the double-arm overhead extension for the triceps because you can't hold the weight as you should for those movements. It is quite confusing to distinguish between the various series, models and add-ons, especially when you’re just starting to research them. It has an open handle / “wedge” design. This gives your wrist and forearm more range of motion. And it makes it more comfortable if your forearms is up against the side of the handle since you don’t have the plastic edge digging in.

If you're looking for portable weights for travel, the Deiris Travel Weights are hollow and can be filled with water to adjust the weight. Although these adjustable dumbbells are shaped quite unconventionally, they're very storable given their square shape, which we think makes them worth it for those with smaller spaces. There is a sound of metal on metal since they're not one piece, solid dumbbells. Even though they are strong and durable, you still have to be more careful with them, and you certainly don't want to drop them If at all possible.

It can’t do micro-adjustments of 2.5 lbs since it doesn’t have adder weights. However, it can still do 5 lb increments which are small enough for most exercises most of the time. Beginners will like the Bowflex SelectTech because it's easier to operate and lift. This also decreases the time it takes to change the weight you want to use. This would be beneficial if you were to perform supersets with different weights on different exercises or dropsets on the same exercise. What We Don't Like About Bowflex

One disadvantage of adjustable dumbbells is that the shape of the weight may force you to adjust how you train. The size of the weight or the way it's designed could force you to select another exercise or alter how you perform it. The extender options are absolutely worth it for those who lift heavier and need more weight; the non-expandable options are a great value for people who don’t need lots of weight. NOTE: Although the 90 lb Pro EXP Stage 3 set would be my ideal first choice, I understand that budget is very important for most people, myself included…

The pin has magnets on the inside to hold it securely against the weights. Although I’ve had mine fall out during dumbbell snatches one time, it was only because I didn’t place it all the way in. Otherwise, this method for holding the weights hasn’t caused me any issues. The BowFlex SelectTech adjustable dumbbell is easier to operate because you adjust a dial to change the weights. The dials can be turned in either direction. You have to make sure the numbers are the same on both ends of the weight before removing it from the stand. The Ativafit Adjustable Dumbbell has a small weight range that is good for beginner lifters but comes as a single dumbbell rather than a set. Elite Series: Formerly called the “Classic Series,” this includes both the Elite USA and the Elite EXP. The Elite EXP are imported and only sold through third-party retailers. The Pro 175 Commercial Set (Note: you can convert the Pro 125 set into the Pro 175 set with the this 125-175 lb expansion kit.)

You can achieve 5 lb increments by swapping the handles as needed. This is a small enough increment for efficient strength progression for most lifters on most exercises. Sometimes 2.5 lb increments would be nice, but 5 lbs is quite reasonable. And again, you don’t have to worry about adder weights to get this increment. Both sets go up to 90 lbs per dumbbell. This is plenty of weight for the vast majority of lifters on the vast majority of exercises. Perfect for intermediate-to-advanced weightlifters, these dumbbells adjust from 15 to 55 pounds in 10-pound increments, making a single dumbbell the equivalent of five sets of weights. This weight range may not be the best for beginners, as starting off with 15-pound weights and progressing the load at a pace of 10 pounds can be difficult for those just starting out. Again, while the caged handle doesn’t bother me, I recognize that people used to lifting with traditional fixed dumbbells might not like the feeling. It might take some getting used to. But, it’s a small sacrifice to make considering the big value you get from these. A Little NoiseAlthough these dumbbells don't ship assembled, it took us less than five minutes to fully assemble them, without needing any tools. Like the Bowflex weights, Core Home Fitness' Adjustable Dumbbells are simple to use. We were able to easily adjust the weights from exercise to exercise with a simple twist of the handles. However, we still think the Bowflex pair is superior for adjustability because it adjusts in 2.5-pound increments up to 25 pounds and offers 15 weights in one, while this pair adjusts in 5-pound increments and only offers users 10 weights in one. It’s overall more durable so it can handle rougher commercial gym use conditions. However, because these are likely to be used in tougher settings, they have a shorter 1-year commercial warranty, as opposed to the 5-year limited home use warranty that the Pro EXP has. These dumbbells are listed as "adjustable," but they only adjust to three weights. When we weighed each dumbbell in the Lab, the minimum weight per dumbbell was 2.2 pounds (although the manufacturer lists it as 2.3 pounds), the medium weight was 3.4 pounds, and the maximum weight was 4.4 pounds (although the manufacturer lists it as 4.5 pounds). But we still found them super easy to adjust while you exercise—simply twist open the ends of the dumbbells to add or remove the small weight bars found inside to increase or decrease the weight.
