About this deal

I really enjoyed in this book how it switched from each different character’s point of view and how In Skin Taker, the clans are waiting for Sunwake after the long days of winter, but disaster strikes as a phenomenon they call the Thunderstar, something that I think we would call a meteor, strikes the heart of the forest killing The First Tree. Torak and Renn need to travel north to the deep forest to try and save the First Tree and their forest home, but a new leader has come to power in the North. He is intent on creating further division in the clans between “The Chosen Ones” safe in the surviving forests of the north and the decimated southern clans Michelle Paver writes her stories, by making them so gripping and hard to put down. I would definitely recommend it to anybody who likes to read an exciting fantasy fiction book with demons,

What are the joys and challenges of writing a new story in such a popular and well-loved series of books? Assorted other narratives present The Skin Taker as a foreboding sign of what is to come. The protagonist of "Candle Cove: Day of the Dead" recalls how her son received a macabre statuette of The Skin Taker playing a piano not long before he was murdered by a man for playing the Candle Cove theme. To gain insights into how Torak’s people perceive the meteorite strike, I’ve studied eyewitness accounts of the Evenk people of the remote Tunguska region of Siberia, which was famously blasted by a meteorite in 1908. These reindeer herders’ accounts were written down decades later, but they retain the freshness of indelible memories.

The Fandom Games (Hobbit4Lyfe) Fandoms: Hunger Games Series - All Media Types, Jurassic World Trilogy (Movies), The Good Place (TV), Nancy Drew (Video Games), Star Trek: Alternate Original Series (Movies), Withnail & I (1986), Channel Zero (TV), Candle Cove, Doctor Who (2005) They change from time to time, but here are the ones that have lasted. For heroes, it’s Aragorn from The Lord of the Rings and Hector from The Iliad. For villains, it’s Dracula (the Bram Stoker one, of course), and Stavrogin from The Devils. In the " Screaming Episode", Horace is seen screaming and flailing around violently along with the other puppets. Unlike the rest of the puppets, his is the only one not destroyed, and was only minorly damaged. It’s a darker story than many of those that have come before, with the Forest devastated by a disaster that throws the clans’ way of life into disarray and pushes the characters to their limits of despair. The exploration of human endurance and community spirit in the face of adversity was a great theme and I was surprised to see Paver comment in her ‘Author’s Note’ that the similarities to the COVID-19 pandemic were unintentional. The plot follows similar lines to previous entries in the series: a quest with mysteries and riddles to solve; a journey through the forest, evading new (and old) foes and surviving against the harsh wilds. In many ways it reminded me of the first and fifth books of the series, though I suspect some of the thematic and plot beat parallels were intentional; they worked well to link with the past while still going in new directions. The multitude of references and nods to established lore was also a great reward for those of us that have reread this series over and over. I can’t comment much on the villain and climax of the novel without a spoiler tag, so I’ll simply say I’m happy with how Paver handled both. The climax in particular was a stark difference to what’s come before, and I enjoyed the time that was taken to ‘decompress’ afterwards. There's no better time-travelling guide than Michelle Paver ... with its action, clever character development and glorious descriptions of nature 6,000 years ago' The Times on Viper's Daughter

Synopsis

The world of Torak and Renn is that of six thousand years ago. That’s after the Ice Age, but before farming spread to Scandinavia – when the land was one vast Forest. The first book I remember looking at was a big illustrated book about Stone Age people, although at the time I was too young to read the captions. Two of the first books I actually read were Finn Family Moomintroll by Tove Jansson, and a terrifically exciting adventure about a horse, called The Sagebrush Sorrel. I’ve still got all three books.

Following on from the events of Viper’s Daughter, a meteorite strikes the forest, and the clans are plunged into darkness as even the first tree vanishes. Once again, our heroes set off to save the world, but to do so they must perform the most complicated of Mage Rites and confront a deadly evil. Great question. The joys include being reunited with Torak, Renn and Wolf – as well as other favourite characters such as Fin-Kedinn, Dark and the Walker. I also love evoking the Forest, the Sea, and all the many creatures whom my characters encounter in their adventures, as well as introducing the reader to new clans. The challenges include how to keep each new story vivid and exciting, without repeating what has gone before – AND how to ensure that each new story appeals both to fans of the series, and to readers who are new to the WOLF BROTHER books, and want a standalone story. The story starts in midwinter, when disaster strikes the Forest. Demons thrive. The clans battle to survive: do they turn on each other, or pull together? Torak, Renn and Wolf find their whole world in turmoil, and it’s up to them to save it. This is particularly hard for Torak – who, being especially close to the Forest, feels its devastation as no one else can.Another outstanding story, Skin Taker, like its fellows, deserves more than one reading to truly appreciate the detail and care with which it has been written. I cannot wait for the final instalment.

Many thanks so Zephyr Books and NetGalley for an advanced copy of Skin Taker by Michelle Paver in exchange for an honest review. This review may not be very objective, as when I was younger, I was a massive fan of the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series, I've read Wolf Brother at least ten times, and I even named a hamster after Renn!

Reviews

Candle Cove has haunted Janice ever since she returned to the real world, and though she has tried to move on it still leaves its mark. Ongoing nightmares, being treated as crazy and the endless struggle to repair her relationship with her older sister, Melrose. His cape gets longer and longer during the series. At one point, after Janice's actress changes, it gets almost twice as long, which is the most noticeable time when this occurs. Every time I read one of these books, it doesn't matter which one, there is always such a sense of safety, of coming home, and honestly it's a feeling I cannot get enough of. Even in the darkest moments, the Forest is a welcome respite from the real world. I can almost smell the tang of pine blood, hear the voices of the trees as they chatter among themselves as I pass.
