About this deal

I can still picture the purple cover with a massive chocolate-making machine on it, surrounded by the golden ticket winners. Interestingly, according to IMDB – so you know its true – Peter Ostrum, the child actor who portrayed Charlie Bucket, only ever appeared in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, it was his only film credit. Maybe i'm reading too far into it, but it seems like a very unethical capitalistic scheme and instead of seeing Oompa-Loompas as people eager to make some chocolate, they seemed rather treated as inferior.

Editions of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl

In 2012, Charlie Bucket brandishing a Golden Ticket appeared in a Royal Mail first class stamp in the UK.Picture his reaction when Mike Teavee asks quite sensible questions, and he pretends to be deaf or accuses Mike of mumbling so he doesn't have to answer them. This classic of children’s fantasy, for all the beauty of its more lyrical passages and its flights of fancy, draws much of its depth and resonance from its gritty, tough-minded qualities. The caption that accompanies the image said the new cover "highlights the way Roald Dahl's writing manages to embrace both the light and the dark aspects of life. Bucket’s humdrum factory job is not enough to provide for the family; the Buckets are constantly hungry, and their ramshackle house can’t even keep out the winter cold. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Colour Edition) : Dahl Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Colour Edition) : Dahl

We at Penguin Random House Australia acknowledge that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the Traditional Custodians and the first storytellers of the lands on which we live and work. One day, Charlie's bedridden Grandpa Joe tells him about Willy Wonka, the factory's eccentric owner, and all of his fantastical candies. Amongst other things, Dahl was unhappy with the foregrounding of Wonka over Charlie, and disliked the musical score. The brief note before the story described the story as having been left out of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory due to an already brimming number of misbehaving children characters in the tale. It had a curious taste which reminded him of cheese, tulips and something he couldn't name, but somehow it was quite delicious.

One thing I will say that I don’t remember quite as much from my child years, but I notice when revisiting as an adult – Willy Wonka is kind of a jerk.
