Back when my brother bought the original bottle, which was his signature for years, it was on his shelf and I kept sniffing his bottle in secret. One particular reason why I not only like this fragrance, but love it: I can't explain exactly why, but "Number One" by Hugo Boss embodies radiant sunshine for me. Also the pleasant smells of the wooded and green surroundings and the garden come back to my memory.It's really sad that Coty US, LLC totally screwed up a once classic, beautiful, and very long-lasting fragrance for men, Hugo Boss' namesake!

It's truly sad how the "new generation" of marketing bozos are taking over the fragrance companies and discontinuing fragrances they deem as "too old," or reformulating classic fragrances to the point they are no longer recognizable as the originals. This scent remains with us for 5 to 6 hours and says goodbye slowly; but not as light as a feather like the dandelion; and a sour honey remains with the memory of the animalism of the little puppies. I now had to know quickly what it was and asked the saleswoman about it, who informed me that it was Boss Number One. This fragrance is for the man who never settles for less than the best, opening with fresh, invigorating nutmeg and cardamom, fused with a heart of patchouli and sandalwood.With most fragrances nowadays being reformulated and watered down, I guess I should have expected that with Boss Number One. First of all: I can agree with the general tenor that the fragrance is an absolute grower and needs some time to get used to. Slowly the earthy patchouli begins to grow, beginning powdery and strachy, to become later slightly bitter and smoky, with a faint scent of iris, certainly due to the orris root note. I had that with a whisky once: I found the Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban horrible in the first dram, after the second tasting it was fine, after the third tasting it was even really good and after the fourth glass at the latest it was clear that it would be bought again.
