About this deal

In the mouth: First sip is an orange peel that offers nothing in the midpalate, but finishes with an oak forward dark toast blip that fades back into that soft vanilla. It’s smooth, with a noticeable palate weight, and exhibits pronounced caramel and butterscotch notes accompanied by stone fruit and tropical fruit flavors, along with cinnamon and a bit of clove. Not too far, but also not too little, the company offers something new, unexpected, and in the end, a solid drinker above all else.

Nose: Light notes of wood varnish and caramel can’t distract from the truly classic Jack Daniel’s aroma. Jack Daniel’s has been on a tear of late, dropping special editions and permanent line extensions like JD 10 Years Old left and right.Single Barrel is usually very good (the Coy Hill release was probably the highest proof whiskey I’ve ever tried, for better or worse), the 10-Year-Old was one of my favorites of the past year, and the Tennessee Tasters series has had some welcome surprises. It’s spicier, however, with more pronounced cinnamon and clove notes and even a bit of nutmeg as a result of the higher rye component in the overall blend.

It seems obvious that such a popular whiskey brand would run the gamut with their signature flavor profile, especially one as distinct as Jack Daniel’s. What I will do is say that unlike most of what we’ve seen from JD in recent years, these are indeed permanent expressions, both bonded, so over 4 years old and bottled at 100 proof. The Jack Daniel Distillery has been making exceptional American whiskey to the highest standards for generations, before and after the Bottled in Bond Act, dating back to the days of Mr.Master Distiller Chris Fletch has said of the series, “Jack Daniel’s Bonded and Triple Mash are a nod to our heritage with a touch of innovation and craftsmanship. Jack Daniel’s allows its whiskey to drip for six days in 10-foot vats, passing through charcoal that was made by burning maple wood that had been impregnated with 140 proof Jack Daniel’s whiskey, before being put in new charred oak barrels and aged for at least 4 years. Despite being bottled at the same proof, the Triple Mash stands out with its enhanced body and bolder taste, all without sacrificing smoothness or becoming harsh. Palate: With the first taste, I encountered strong notes of honey and apricot, then mid-way through it developed in complexity, and I was reminded of the skin of a tobacco leaf, with the finish smooth and slightly smoky. Chewy and more malt-focused on the tongue, the whiskey takes a peppery turn late in the game on the palate, a rumbling note of roasted almonds, milk chocolate, coconut, and indistinct spice all in a slurry. there is a huge line of Jack exclusives and I think we see more coming with no signs of slowing down. The long finish introduces more pronounced rye spice, baking spice, and subtle bitter chocolate notes, concluding the experience on a satisfying note. Jack Daniel’s new Bonded Tennessee Whiskey and Triple Mash Blended Straight Whiskey represent the first two permanent expressions in the brand’s new Bonded Series.

That means they are the product of a single distillery, made in one season, are aged in a government bonded warehouse for a minimum of four years and are bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV). Red raspberry, dark cherry, cola, and marzipan lead a front of sweet flavors that refrain from going overboard thanks to their overall heaviness.

Both whiskeys are bottled in bond but the Triple Mash is a unique blend of three whiskeys crafted at the Lynchburg Distillery. That trademark banana bread is present, along with some tannic spice, brandied cherry, leather wallet and bitter cocoa powder notes, followed by a pleasantly hot finish.Nowadays, there are some who consider the BIB designation as more of a marketing gimmick than a useful indicator, given how strictly regulated alcohol is here in the US. Selecting the more worthy barrels most certainly factors into the mix, and I would expect Jack Daniel’s master distiller Chris Fletcher and his team would select some of the better barrels for this particular release. Jack fans will likely love the new playspace it offers them, and passers-by might have their curiosity piqued.
