I found it fascinating to view London from its infancy to mid-20th century through their eyes- a la Forest Gump, if you will. Using real life stories and actual historical figures it conveys a sense of realism as it hones in on certain characters pinpointing who they are and where they fit in to the overall proceedings going on. There is usually an extensive family tree in the introduction, with each generational line matching the corresponding chapters.

This epic work really does bring history alive in your as Rutherford moves from chapter to chapter effortlessly tracing the history of the remarkable city London and 5 remarkable families . When I was a child, there were two places: North Carolina and London (Agatha Christie, the Beatles, and haircuts, etc. London covers almost two thousand years of history and focuses on a few familial hereditary lines throughout that span of time. A story that follows the River Thames as it flows through the heart of London, from the days of the Romans, through 16 centuries to the Victorian engineers who gave the city so many of its famous bridges, to the Dockland development of today. At the end of the Wars of the Roses, London had perhaps fifty thousand people; by Elizabeth’s last years, four times that number.Al principio y con esa justificación lo dejaba estar, pero cuando llevas más o menos la mitad del libro empieza a molestarte un poco, porque no deja de ser una novela y los personajes son una parte fundamental. and sometimes in our work here , I feel as if we've somehow entered that layer of compressed time ,prised open that life , a single day even , with its morning , and evening , and its blue sky and its horizon. In the tradition of his highly praised best-seller Sarum, Edward Rutherfurd uses the canvas of history as a backdrop for a novel on an epic scale. I probably could have done without the first 200 pages, I really didn't need to know how the White Cliffs of Dover were formed to lead into the rest of the book, but once I got past the first several centuries, the book became much more interesting. Establishing himself as a key figure within the industry, this legacy will continue on for some time yet.

I even have another Rutherfurd book, The Forest, as a carrot for when I am finished with unpacking boxes. His clever use of identifying features for each family through time kept me oriented, but the characters themselves are each unique, flawed, and delightful. This made the book easy to digest, where a hardcore history book might have been a little dry, I suppose. It took some time to get through, partly because it began to feel like a chore rather than a pastime. Focusing on the Romanovs, Karpenkos, Popov, Suvorins and Bobrovs, it tells their intertwined stories in great detail and depth, with great attention to accuracy too.
