About this deal

Twelve year old Tim Parry was taken off life support with permission from his mother after five days in the hospital, virtually braindead.

The imagery is brutal and vivid yet there is humour here, black humour where each laugh carries a pang of guilt. From murder in a Hebridean blackhouse and a macabre tale of revenge among the furious clamor of an eighteenth century mill, to a dark psychological thriller set within the tourist throng of Edinburgh Castle and an ‘urbex’ rivalry turning fatal in the concrete galleries of an abandoned modernist ruin, this collection uncovers the intimate―and deadly―connections between people and places. Quite Ugly One Morning is the book that made Christopher Brookmyre a star in his native Britain, establishing his distinctive, scabrously humorous style and breakneck, hell-for-leather narrative pacing. Meanwhile, Scottish journalist Jack Parlabane just watched his career and marriage vanish, along with his reputation, after landing himself on the wrong end of a scandal. Having failed to apprehend Darren and informed by Jack, Dalziel and the inspectors race to Lime's home, only to find him missing and an empty case of shotgun shells. The producers had originally wanted Scottish actor Douglas Henshall to play Parlabane, but they were overruled by ITV's commissioners [1] (Henshall had previously played Parlabane in a radio adaptation of the short story "Bampot Central"). With Lime and Darren arrested and the case closed, Jack and Sarah agree to spend some time together, and kiss. Ross Baker is an overworked scientist developing medical technology for corporate giant Neurosphere, but he'd rather be playing computer games than dealing with his nightmare boss or slacker co-workers.

A thoroughly enjoyable listen, recommended for anyone who likes a good crime drama with a healthy helping of humour! I know, as a sort of armchair rock-historian, that there have been few bands so daring and so true to the sound that wanted to emerge from within, whether the creator wanted it or not.

However, if you've read the book - or any of the other books by Brookmyre - then you'd probably best avoid it.

The second book in the Jack Parlabane book series is Quiet Ugly One Morning, which previously was titled Country of the Blind. Christopher Brookmyre is a Scottish novelist whose novels mix politics, social comment and action with a strong narrative. Detective Superintendent Catherine McLeod has one major Glaswegian gangster in the mortuary and another in the cells for killing him - which ought to be cause for celebration. Certainly a story to listen to again, highly entertaining and even when you know whodunnit, these are characters well worth re-visiting. Without spoiling the plot, I think I can say that readers who are interested in the way health care, politics and government work (or don’t work) together will be pleased.Except this stiff happens to be a Ponsonby, scion of a venerable Edinburgh medical clan, and the manner of his death speaks of unspeakable things. Sam Morpeth is growing up way too fast, left to fend for a younger sister when their mother goes to prison and watching her dreams of university evaporate. Brookmyre is known for his fast-paced plotting, dark humour and unusual book titles, many of which are based on popular phrases, clichés and sayings such as Quite Ugly One Morning (1996) and All Fun and Games Until Somebody Loses an Eye (2005).
