About this deal

He finally settled in Thailand, first in Bangkok and then in the northern city of Chiang Mai, where he committed the crime that is never explicitly named in the short narratives that make up this prison memoir (the cover copy suggests it was related to his failure to report a friend for murder, and documents reproduced inside suggest he was charged officially as an accessory). Always aware of the reality he faces daily and of its context outside the prison Hoy comes through a most degrading experience whole and unbrutalized.

Just seems like a bunch stuff put together, does gives you an image of how such a prison and culture works, but at the same doesn't really have a cohesive story (there is a better book about same topic). Go places you’ve only seen in your nightmares, to a world in which few survive, and none emerge unscathed . While attempting to “adjust” to this third-world hellhole, he contracts tuberculosis and nearly loses his life.

Before you start Complete Rotting in the Bangkok Hilton: The Gruesome True Story of a Man Who Survived Thailand’s Deadliest Prisons PDF EPUB by T. We live today as courtiers once did in royal courts: we must appear civil while attempting to crush all those around us. Download Rotting in the Bangkok Hilton: The Gruesome True Story of a Man Who Survived Thailand’s Deadliest Prisons by T. It is narrated very well by a non annoying American reader who brings to life the daily hell of the prison the story is set in. Other then the lack of personal statements the audio book was easy listening some good stories but no real attachment to Hoy as he’s just telling the tails of others.

The authors have created a sort of anti-Book of Virtues in this encyclopedic compendium of the ways and means of power. Prisoners were kept in crowded cells where they slept on the floor in spaces too small for their bodies. Despite the cruel treatment and lifestyle of the prison, the author was able to find whispers of humanity in some inmates he’s met in his time served. Some of the stories were quite heart rendering and the authors description of the prison conditions and the brutality experienced within the prison should serve as a deterrent to anyone who thinks they can bypass the law in this country. The overall picture is not the unrelentingly gruesome story promised but rather a thoughtful series of meditations on living. He was finally released to the Americans on a treaty transfer to spend the rest of his sentence in the United States. The real-life account of an American serving time in a Thailand prison, Rotting in the Bangkok Hilton summons listeners to a gruesome realm of chronic hunger, unchecked violence, torture, degradation, and extortion. For me Marching Powder by Rusty Young or Hotel Kerobokan by Kathryn Bonella give a much better account. Whatever the actual crime, he was sent to Chiang Mai Remand Prison, then given a life sentence and transferred to Bang Kwang, the country’s most notorious prison. Each chapter is conveniently broken down into sections on what happened to those who transgressed or observed the particular law, the key elements in this law, and ways to defensively reverse this law when it’s used against you.

I quite enjoyed this collection of stories based in the infamous "Bangkok Hilton" and as recollected by the author. I found this book more of a stack of very short stories of other prisoners histories, when I had been expecting more of a biography of the authors time in prison. This book does suffer a little bit from a lack of structure but otherwise is definitely worth a read. Each law, however, gets its own chapter: “Conceal Your Intentions,” “Always Say Less Than Necessary,” “Pose as a Friend, Work as a Spy,” and so on.Sadly this was a culmination of other people’s narrative that didn’t quite come together as smoothly. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Hoy's memoir, written in the hope he might bribe his way to freedom using its proceeds, is sure to inflame and excite listeners with its unnerving portrayal of a third world penal system.
