About this deal

The grind is consistent and efficient and in terms of noise, the Sage isn’t too disruptive, so you won’t find it too offensive first thing in the morning.

This is also a problem when you change the grind size as you will have to purge the coffee in most grinders to see the change in the grind. It even kicks into action just from pushing your portafilter into its cradle, so you don’t even have to push a button. I did have to modify the De’Longhi to get a finer grind and it’s still working away without any problems. I'd previously made the assumption (as this has happened to me many times with integrated grinder machines) that it was an issue to do with the humidity in the hopper changing in integrated grinder machines like the Barista Express or the Oracle when the machine is turned on, but I found that the changes in humidity in my studio, which is a fairly normal environment, changed by as much as about 12% during a period of about an hour, both outside the hopper, and inside the hopper. The dials to adjust grind amount and program, as well as grind size, are smooth and easy to use, while the buttons to start or pause, and to adjust shots and cups are responsive and self-explanatory. Then just put the rest of the beans in air-tight storage (or back in the bag if it has a re-seal strip, but be careful to ensure it's definitely sealed as they can be tricky) make your coffee, and then put the rest of the beans back in the more long term storage. You can grind directly into your machine’s portafilter, into the container that comes with it or into anything else, so you can use it straight away or sort your grounds out for later, knowing they’ll still be fresh. Most of the time this question is related to pourover (V60/Chemex/Kalita/Clever Dripper), stovetop, or cafetiere.

It’s generally more ‘intelligent’ than the Smeg model – from grind size to grind time, everything is measured with the utmost precision and the grounds themselves are highly customisable (there are 60 unique settings in total). Taking the Kilner Coffee Grinder set from its fully recyclable box, we found a charming, almost vintage-like, pretty glass jar and a high-quality stainless steel long-handled grinder. The obvious difference between the Sage Barista Pro and the Dose Control is the LCD screen or lack thereof. Our next generation automatic espresso machine models allow you to simply swipe and select your cafe favourites on the touchscreen, while our manual coffee machine models give you the hands on control of a barista, like a pro.

First of all the large 375g hopper is loaded with coffee and the grind size is adjusted traditionally at the collar of the machine.

When you brew the ground coffee some of the coffee grinds will under extract and taste sour, while others will over-extract and taste bitter. These features, along with the high build quality, the brand quality and the 2 year guarantee are what makes this Sage Dose model stand out from the others on the UK market. If you’re just starting out and learning the ins and outs of espresso then the Intuitive nature of the Smart Grinder Pro will aid your learning.

Watch out for a few rogue coffee grinds ending up on your work surface here if the container doesn’t fit snug.If you've not heard of shimming, I'm not referring to what someone doing a Whim Hoff inspired cold water swim may say through gritted teeth when trying to describe what they're doing virtually naked in a partially frozen lake. By all means, try blending coffee though (most blenders will be able to handle coffee beans) and then grind the coffee with one of the burr grinders mentioned above and taste the difference. Choose between 'cups' for French Press or filter and 'shots' for Espresso to get the right dose for the coffee you're brewing.
