With their infectious energy bursting through the speakers, Stop Making Sense hears Talking Heads at the top of their game, and arguably, they sound better here than they do on record. I don't know what an original vinyl sounds like (I had it on cassette back in the day), but it was digital to begin with. It isn’t a star-studded final farewell like The Band’s benchmark The Last Waltz, a theatrical epic like Prince’s films, an album showcase like Neil Young’s Rust Never Sleeps, or one with a trip-friendly, near-mystical venue backdrop such as Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii. The first song to feature the entire lineup is " Burning Down the House", although the original 1985 RCA/Columbia Home Video release (which featured three additional songs in two performances edited into the film) has the entire band (minus Worrell) performing " Cities" before this song.

The inspiration for Stop Making Sense came when Demme saw Talking Heads perform during the band’s 1983 tour for Speaking in Tongues. The polyrhythmic funk of Byrne solo number ‘Big Business’ segues seamlessly into the ferocious bongo-led drive of ‘I Zimbra’, while the bouncy, queasy bass of ‘Cities’ is brought to the forefront, making for two further enticing treats for an already bountiful record set. And if you like the full length of the tracks played during their concerts at that time you will be pleased.
