About this deal

What a brilliant debut novel from Tamzin Merchant, and a wonderful way to kick off my reading for 2021! She headlined at women's events, parenting and adoption conferences, and participated in a variety of social service ministries such as the Legacy Collective which has been active in Texas hurricane recovery.

There is much character driven humour to alleviate the impending sense of menace, as Cordelia and her allies race against time to deliver their hat to the princess for the peace talks, and win back respect for the Maker families.Stories featuring strong female hatmakers have captured my heart since meeting Sophie in Market Chipping and this one is no different. The first in a new series set in an alternative England where those who make clothes (The Makers) can use their skills to add magic to their garments for a variety of purposes. Jordan Hatmaker, a 35-year-old from Virginia Beach, Virginia, just barely survived from the near-death experience, forcing doctors to remark that it was “miraculous” she was not only alive, but not paralysed.

Hatmaking is just one of the ‘Maker’ magical skills and the Hatmaker family is joined by the Bootmakers, the Glovemakers and more. Hatmaker's views came through the reasoning of consequentialism, declaring, "the fruit of the non-affirming Christian tree. From there, the novel evolved into a rich study of character and family bonds, layered with themes of prejudice, ambition, tragedy, rejection, identity, secrecy and desire. It’s not all traditional hat styles either – more recently, the label has branched out into premium baseball caps and beanies. In light of the death of Dave Hollis on 2/11/2023, the moderation levels will be different than we are used to. One of the biggest benefits of this trend is it gives more exposure to people, topics, and ideas that might not come up in traditional settings. I loved how the magic was a part of the careers of the characters and I loved the glossary at the back that explained all the ingredients.

Working with SilverWood has also given Jill the chance to issue a second edition of The Hatmaker's Secret and bring it up to a standard that she feels fits with the rest of her novels. With such an extensive variety of skills in custom handcrafting within one group and a long ongoing tradition of collaborations and custom commissions for film, VIP's and royalty, we have garnered a great deal of media attention. Church organizations, of course, also offer doctrinal accountability and a degree of security that can be absent from self-made ministries that depend on book sales, speaking gigs, and other measures of popularity. Hatmaker and her then-husband, Brandon, founded Austin New Church in 2008 [7] [8] located in Austin, Texas.Set in a world where there are Makers, such as the Hatmakers, who weave enchantments into the hats they produce, allowing the wearer to be more bold, daring. And the hats need unique ingredients—like feather of an owl for which you have to undertake a journey, storms in jars, moonbeams etc. Filled with invention and mystery as well as some wonderful characters, this action-packed adventure sparkles, author Tamzin Merchant mixing just the right amounts of Georgian London and magic into the story.

The biggest names in women’s ministry—from Hatmaker to authors like Shauna Niequist—remain intimately involved in their own local churches, and most have Bible college or seminary degrees.Jill's passion for writing began at an early age and she remembers creating imaginary tales throughout her childhood. In her world the Maker families possess a rare and ancient skill, allowing them to craft items such as hats, gloves, cloaks and boots that are woven with magical ingredients. It comes through at every stage, with brilliant communication, quick replies to questions, and a real sense of coordination within their team. It's been part of the process for all my books - making sure the background is solid, whether it's from my personal or professional experience or finding experts to educate me and help fill in the gaps. The idea was to recreate vintage baseball caps and apparel using original team logos, and do it all using robust materials like thick wool felt.
