It almost led to her undoing, as Joyce continued to revise the manuscript even after it was being set for print.The original work by Homer, through projection and interpretation, centuries later, landed up as being something completely different in the hands of James Joyce, which added an anti-Semitic, anti-Christian flair and some salacious details to the characters. a beautiful window into the life of a fascinating woman who defied convention in almost every area of her life and succeeded in publishing one of the most controversial novels of the early twentieth century . Censorship was rife in the USA at the time (hence the banning of ‘Ulysses’), prohibition was in full swing, and homosexuality illegal, whereas France was much more liberal on all counts. One which means that all his relationships are about how others can serve him and not the other way around. So first I talk with you guys about the experience of the book, and then later today with him, over a metaphorical cup of coffee.

The original epic poem The Odyssey, by Homer—on which Joyce based his novel Ulysses—is about Odysseus trying to get home to Ithaca after the Trojan War so that he could be reunited with his wife, Penelope. Silvia was also great friends with Hemingway and Fitzgerald and Gertrude Stein so all these characters appear in the book also.

It’s fabulous historical fiction that made me feel as if I had just opened up a time capsule of the fascinating times of 1920’s Paris ! Also, every time we would begin to have a more meaningful conversation between for example Sylvia and her lover Adrienne, it would always just scratch the surface before they just began to have sex.

Sylvia’s work with Joyce almost is her undoing both financially and emotionally; and may end the fragile friendship between herself and Joyce. Likewise, the inclusion of LGBTQIA+ characters, and the related discussions of the attitudes of the time are included in a sensitive fashion, rather than to sensationalise the book or make it feel more cosmopolitan. The Paris Bookseller, by Kerri Maher, tells the story of the real-life Sylvia Beach in sort of a historical non-fiction take. The Paris Bookseller is a beautifully written homage to those who keep literature alive and to the quirky inhabitants of the literary community whose work sometimes transcends their personal failings. Sylvia decides to champion this momentous novel and its author by publishing it herself despite never having ventured into the field before.With all the color and verve of post WWI Paris and the deep love of literature that pervades every page, The Paris Bookseller is a novel for book lovers to treasure. Even the mercurial figure of Joyce, portrayed here warts and all with his bad behaviour and constant taking of advantage, is treated with sympathy.

Because of its difficulty, Ulysses is also one of those novels that people often “fake” having read or keep on their TBR lists forever. Any "Author Information" displayed below reflects the author's biography at the time this particular book was published. But apart from some references to laws and of course all of the famous characters, I didn't really think that I got any kind of atmosphere to really experience Paris in the 1920s (which is a shame because it is one of my favourite time periods to read about! Maher fills her story with quite a few of the “names” of the day - Gertrude Stein, Hemingway, Ezra Pound and especially Joyce.The world Adrienne and Sylvia created as a young lesbian couple in 1920's Paris, was all about being outside of the norms and the emergence of new artistry, and female development and empowerment. Prior the publishing of the complete book, Ulysses was excerpted in The Little Review in 1918–20, at which time further publication of the book was banned, as the work was excoriated by authorities for being prurient and obscene. If you’re looking to travel to Paris in the 1920s; if you loved Midnight in Paris; or if you’re interested in literature and the history publishing, then this is the book for you.
