About this deal

The tomato plant is an annual plant and like many other annuals needs a lot of nutrients to grow healthy fruits and produce a good harvest. Tomato feeds are also great for feeding pots of flowering patio plants, such as petunias and begonias. Just before your tomato plant begins to flower, additional potassium makes them strong and additional phosphorous gives big and juicy fruits.

Only add fertilisers to plants before and during the growing season, because these additions tend to be washed out of the soil during winter. Cut along the dotted lines of the panels you want to use, if you are only planting two plants, use the end panels.Levington Tomorite, Chempak, Maxicrop and Vitax are some of the well-known brands for producing liquid tomato food. Of course most of us in the UK have had very good weather over the past few weeks, so it won’t be put to the test unless poor weather arrives – let’s hope not! Different plants need different types of food, so it’s important to know what kind of plant you have before feeding it. This is also great for all over fruiting vegetables and flowering pot plants that like a high potash feed.

Tomatoes are one of our favourite vegetables to grow, but making sure you get the tastiest and biggest crop means you’ll need to feed your plants. What is key in looking after your tomato plants is how you use the tomato feed, giving the correct amount of fertilizer regularly and avoiding overfeeding the tomato plant. Give the bag a good shake, this will help to evenly distribute the compost, and make sure any compacted lumps are broken down. Removing side shoots and leaf pruning is best done in the mornings when plants are in their most turgid state – that’s firm and stiff, making it easier to snap off shoots etc.

The late sown Red Alerts produced their first trusses faster than any other strain this year, so hopefully we will get a reasonable crop late on. Removing some of the lower leaf branches will help reduce the amount of water they need but remove branches below first truss gradually. Thick skins are usually the result of growing conditions outside … wide temperature swings and the difficulty of keeping the soil moisture level not too dry or wet.

However, because a plant’s system requires a continual flow of moisture around its parts, any interruption to its water supply can have a knock-on effect. Vitax is a high potash (potassium) liquid tomato feed, it comes in a great pack with clear instructions on how to apply it to individual tomato plants. Fish, blood and bone is good for adding to the ground to raise fertility or increase soil nutrients following a hungry crop. But this organic material improves soil structure when dug in, creating a friable mixture that encourages root growth. If you’re not sure whether or not to feed your plants with tomorite, consult a gardening expert for advice. During the summer newly planted roses will also need watering regularly until their roots are established.

In this section, I’ll cover the different types of tomato feed necessary that you can use to maximise the growth of a healthy and high-yielding tomato plant. The main reason for using fertilizer on your plants, be it an indoor or outdoor plant, is to ensure that the plant receives the right balance of nutrients to grow and thrive.

British wildflowers also prefer low-nutrient soils, so concentrate fertilisers in certain areas and feed in the growing season - including September.
