About this deal

It’s got heroes and villains, vehicles, aliens, soldiers, shooting, high-tech and high-concept, explosions, psychic powers and everything you could want for your Scifi skirmish, all built on a solid grounding of clear and flexible rules. The opposition (Chris and I) fielded an uneasy alliance of Scrappers, Cultists and Radwraiths with some makeshift truck-based artillery, all under the baleful command of the hideous Ezoghoul, a creature resembling a dinosaur caught half-way through doing something unspeakable to a well-rotted horse. In round 7 we didn’t want to loose any more soldiers and thus moved our troops behind cover and into relative safety. Alternatively, you could come at your detachment from the opposite direction, organise your army from the unit list in the book and then find the models to represent them.

Just pick a few dozen troops that catch your eye, from any genre of sci-fi, and then pick relevant units from the book for them to represent. The commander trait rules though are quite lolrandom, a set of d6 tables with several ok, one spectacular and one or two negative traits per, and that doesn’t sit right with me. Trying to get your headstrong knights to go a little complicated flanking manoeuvre is going to be really difficult. It’s mediaeval but the post-Mongol Russian 24-point warband looks very very similar to the early Roman, or to the late Roman kind of Hunnic raider warband because they are the same models with the same rules. So, whatever your science fiction preference, the rules can cover it – just let your imagination run rampant.

For me I think one of the important parts to consider is scenario, a straight forward attack defend scenario leads to a tendency to build a power force. After heavy shooting, and the Imperial Commonwealth having destroyed my Elite Infantry and my Commander, the fight was taken to close hand to hand combat. For players familiar with Lion Rampant or its fantasy equivalent, Dragon Rampant, we take the liberty to evoke in our review some of the most notable changes in Xenos Rampant. You’ll be able to get the models on the board and play a game that seems easy but has enough depth to it that it’ll give you a satisfying game night. To the designers though SP opens up a range of model possibilities that allow for a huge range of flexibility.

I was thinking the same, the one page larger rules are pretty good and well balanced from the times we have played it, but like Pete says the xenos rampant rules are familiar to a lot already. So, whatever your science fiction preference, the rules can cover it - just let your imagination run rampant. Xenos Rampant is the first Rampant title to be set as late as the 20 th century (unless you’re playing very late era The Men Who Would Be Kings). The Men who would be Kings (2016) and others take place in either an historical or fantastical setting.

Xenos Rampant is a setting agnostic, large skirmish, miniature wargame for fighting science fiction battles using 28mm figures. There are rules for guns, and I like that the rules for guns are a little bit weirder than the rules for archers and crossbowmen. On the right side my Support Infantry brought a mortar in position to shoot on the opponents sniper team on the roof of a ruined trade building. If that’s not explanation enough, Xenos Rampant is a large skirmish wargame inspired by the science fiction wargames of the 1980s and 90s. Lenoon: I did the Xenos Rampant review a couple of months back, and now I’ve managed to get models on the table and play some Lion Rampant.

There are also no profiles for anything superheavy if I remember correctly, and vehicles are relatively squishy. Please re-visit this Cookie Notice regularly to stay informed about our use of cookies and related technologies. There’s a lot of Medieval rules out there, so Jackie and Lenoon sat down to chat about it and see what there is to like about this new edition of a well-loved game.Xenos Rampant is a setting agnostic, large skirmish, miniature wargame for fighting science fiction battles using 28mm figures. There’s the tension between people who want absolute control over the models that they have on the table and meaningful differentiation between those units. Also the table of contents (in comparison to other rulebooks) is well structured and allows to move easily through the book and find that one specific rule you are looking for. The things I like about all the Rampant rules are the simplicity and the quick turn-around between turns, which keep the game moving along nice and quickly. David’s commander rolled the “Unpredictable” trait and I did the “Extreme Disciplinarian” aggressive trait.
