About this deal

The Archbishop of Canterbury conducted the service, a duty which has been undertaken since the Conquest in 1066. For the first time in 1953, a representative of another Church, the Moderator of the Church of Scotland, also took part. Coronations have been held at Westminster Abbey for 900 years and The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II was to follow suit. But the Coronation of 1953 was ground-breaking in it's own right – the first ever to be televised, it was watched by 27 million people in the UK alone and millions more audiences around the world. Here are 50 little known facts about that remarkable day on 2 June 1953:

Gun salutes at the Tower of London are fired by the Honourable Artillery Company, and at all saluting stations throughout the UK, Gibraltar, Bermuda, and ships at sea.During the recognition, the King stands in the coronation theatre and turns to show himself to the people at each of the four directions – east, south, west and north. approx – The crowning – the King is crowned by the Archbishop of Canterbury with St Edward’s Crown. On Sunday, May 7, a special Coronation Concert will be staged and broadcast live at Windsor Castle by the BBC and on Monday, May 8, members of the public will be invited to take part in The Big Help Out, which will encourage people to try volunteering and join the work being undertaken to support their local areas.

A big screen in Darlington Market Place will stream the ceremony live from Westminster Abbey, with families also invited to take part in craft sessions in marquee set up in the town centre. On Sunday, May 7, Darlington will host its own Coronation Concert with performances from Britain’s Got Talent's Soldiers of Swing and Discography. In 1937, the 11 year old Princess Elizabeth had watched her father, King George VI, crowned in the elaborate ceremony and 16 years later on 2 June 1953, her own official coronation was to take place.Middlesbrough Council has announced multiple community events taking place across the Bank Holiday weekend and beyond - from kid's parties to themed Coronation talks and museum exhibits. The Lord's Prayer is said and the King and Queen take holy communion. They change into their purple robes of estate in St Edward's Chapel behind the altar and Charles puts on the Imperial State Crown. There is also a number of community get togethers taking place in and around Hartlepool. The Heugh Battery Museum at Hartlepool Headland is inviting people to join them for a giant community street party from 12pm until 4pm on Saturday, May 6, and Sunday, May 7.
