About this deal

I have NEVER been more relieved to pick up my sunglasses and bask in the warm comforting glow of the summer sun! Alix begins to doubt some parts of Josie’s revelations when she talks to people who know her and have interacted with her in the past.

I might have been a bit negative on this one, but be assured it is wildly entertaining and addictive! This heart-pounding, gripping thriller opens with two women celebrating their forty-fifth birthday at the same pub. As the story unfolds, the layers of Josie's character are peeled back, exposing the intricacies of "her very intriguing life story. She is about to say something else about the coincidence of their births when the toilet door opens and one of Alix’s friends walks in. She scattered secrets like candy pieces, which I happily gobbled up along the way, using a nice mix of detail from Josie herself, interviews with people from her past, her mother and others to provide variety and intrigue.

Slowly she starts to realise that Josie has been hiding some very dark secrets, and before she knows it, Josie has inveigled her way into Alix’s life—and into her home. The smile fixes on Josie’s face as she watches Alix Summer and her big group of friends, her red-haired husband with his arm draped loosely across the back of her chair, large platters of meats and breads being brought to their table and placed in front of them as if conjured out of thin air, the sound of them, the noise of them, the way they fill every inch of the space with their voices and their arms and their hands and their words. So you want to tell me that every person was defending on a pedophile and the mc's mum is viciously angry because her 16 year old daughter seduced a 43 year old man who was married to another woman but having an affair with this little girl's mum?In fact, the build up of 85% of the novel is such a beautiful master class on slow burning suspense, and how to do it so that you don’t lose the reader in the process, that I was sure this would be Jewell’s darkest novel yet. A survey of America’s Democratic left, as revealed through the careers of Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Special thanks to NetGalley and Atria Books for sharing this brilliant novels of digital copy in exchange my honest thoughts. However, either way you swing it, there is one particular character who is 100% a horrific person regardless of which scenario is correct.

Things escalate to such a degree you find yourself furiously turning pages in disbelief and yes, there are some jaw droppers!Josie’s life appears to be strange and complicated, and although Alix finds her unsettling, she can’t quite resist the temptation to keep making the podcast. At the end of a particularly sinister and AMAZING horror movie, I always have that moment where I'm GRATEFUL to leave the theater, blink in the sunlight, and feel part of the less ominous real world. I adored the unreliable characters, their dark secrets, the fateful collision of their two different worlds in the same corner of London. The premise of this one had me really looking forward to it – a strange woman befriends a podcaster and drags her into her strange, dark world.
