About this deal

I really liked the little third floor terrace that came with original Market Street design, but I had to get rid of it to accommodate my new studio apartment. Some rarer and more unique, fun parts include the dark grey door frames, the green wig pieces that sub in for lettuces in the market, some other fruit pieces, a lion head “gargoyle” bit, an owl, and some nice “iron” gates. So if there were more such articles, I might be tempted to rebrick the remaining 5 modulars I havent got already. Despite being the smallest, you could argue that it is the most detailed on the outside, which totally makes up for its lack of interior. The simplicity, the awkwardness, the beautiful blue color and the fact that was released on Modular first year make this probably as being my favorite one. This set was designed by adult brick fans and sold by the Danish company as one of their “Factory” line, showcasing fan designs, and leading up to the very popular “Ideas” concept that produces several new sets from the community each year. Cafe Corner may have put modular buildings on the map, but Market Street helped steer a lasting course by being affordable, unique in color elements at the time, and highly customizable. The modular construction allows you to put it together in different ways and to enlarge your LEGO town or city as your collection grows. And much like Cafe Corner (and even Green Grocer, to some extent), the window designs suffer from the more limited parts palette of that time — which really strengthens my appreciation for the modern system of LEGO window and door frames. Of course, after I'm about 3/4 the way through the build and review I see that Legocastlegirl already wrote up a nice review. While the building has a few fancy details and some interesting construction, it’s mostly a case of stacking walls until you get to the top.

The only “modular” I don’t own - i came out of my dark age after it was retired, but only went back for CC and GG.Huw, I know this is pedantic, but could Market Street possibly be added to both the Modular Buildings and the Factory subthemes, for historical reference? The bakery furniture she created for the Market Street building's main floor may be of interest to owners of the set who are thinking about how they might like to furnish it themselves! The stairs are very cleverly done, and the windows are offset half a brick into the wall, but apart from that it’s very simple.
