About this deal

The story of kind-hearted Sara Crewe and her struggles at boarding school, as she goes from riches to rags following the death of her beloved father. Burnett's captivating storytelling and memorable characters have made her a beloved author for readers of all ages. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. When the Queen goes on a trip and sends back a photo of her feeding some penguins, Little Princess decides she wants snow too. Lavinia's best friend Jessie is less malicious, at one point she actually feels sorry for Sara, and reprimands Lavinia for tattling on her.

Unable to pay for her education and having no known relatives, Sara has no choice but to accept a position as a servant at the boarding school. It's much more comfortable after "the magic" comes in and makes the room more livable, even for Becky. Still, I enjoyed the story and as we, the reader, know the neighbour’s identity and motive there is a certain sense of anticipation as we wait for the inevitable reveal of he to Sara, and Sara to he. Then, the tragic news arrives that her father has died penniless and, without wealth or a guardian, Sara is at the mercy of Miss Minchin. But she soon finds there are other children with no friends, and before she knows it she has more friends than she can count!

I highly recommend parents to read this to their children and discuss with them the differences of that time period. It tells the story of Sara Crewe, a young girl who faces adversity with kindness and imagination, proving that true strength comes from within. Subverted with the rat in Sara's attic room whom she befriends and names "Melchisedec," after an Old Testament king.

Earn Your Happy Ending: It's Sara's kindness in the worst possible circumstances that attracts the attention of her father's partner, lying sick in the house next door, and leads to their discovery of each other's identities. The narration states that Jessie isn't wicked, just too weak-willed and easily influenced by the opinions of Alpha Bitch Lavinia. The text appears in short blocks around full-colour illustrations, and is divided into short chapters, making it perfect for new readers. Peer-Pressured Bully: Jessie occasionally feels sad for Sarah after the latter becomes Riches to Rags. Miss Minchin openly fawns over Sara for her money, but is secretly jealous and dislikes Sara almost from the outset. The mention that Sara and her dad "were the dearest friends and lovers in the world" really sounds off to a modern reader. I was convinced that I had read this as a child, and in fact I did have a copy of the book – one of those Parragon Children’s Classics with no illustrations.

Forced to work from dawn until dusk as the school's unpaid servant, she looks over the rooftops from her damp attic room and dreams of a better life. Another parallel could probably be drawn to The Secret Island (1938) with the Arnold children being left with relatives who are supposed to take care of them, only for the death of the parents to lead to them being turned into servants. But her life unfolds in ways she never expected when her father suddenly passes away, and she is left penniless and alone.

Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849–1924) was born in England and moved to the United States as a teenager.

But although her toys and clothes are the envy of the other girls, Sara's kindness and gift for storytelling soon win her lots of friends. As in the 1995 film, Sara's father is later found alive, and, like in the 1995 film, Becky is black. Heroic BSoD: Sara during her most despairing moment is no longer able to pretend that Emily is anything other than a doll and knocks her on the floor. with original music composed by a young girl, Torilinn Cwanek, at the Allen County Public Library Auditorium in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in February 2013, performing six shows.

A substantial portion of the story is given over to Sara's abetting of an illicit romance between an under-teacher and the school's riding master, dramatized in an elaborate fairy-tale dream sequence.
