About this deal

When her behaviours start to trigger Lily into having flashbacks, generations of abuse are uncovered. As it reaches a climax towards the end it’s heartbreaking, so tense the atmosphere can be cut with a knife and although it’s not an easy read you are transfixed. it hooked me from the very first line and i was so intrigued by the story that i read the first act in one sitting. Debut author King skillfully brings to light the layered, deeply complex machinations that lurk below the surface in families and confer the fragile impression of normalcy; this family's crosshairs of obligation, love, and resentment, too, are never oversimplified.

Fun fact—thanks to the delicious taste of mangoes, they're the most popular dessert across the globe. Lily is now wondering what is true and what is false and whether or not her mother has ever been honest with her. Each family member is heartbreakingly damaged in their own way, and they all have such incredibly unhealthy symbiotic relationships. however, i could not give it a 3 star rating because it got boring after the first act — the constant hallucinations felt repetitive and it made the plot stagnant. When May suspects that Charlie is having an affair, there’s only one thing that calms May down: a glass of perfectly spoiled orange juice served by Lily, who must always taste it first to make sure it's just right. It's a fantastic book, but please do be warned - there are triggers to abuse which would be upsetting to some readers. This is such a well done character-driven suspense with some dark themes that will keep you guessing until the end. Ella King deftly explores the toxicity of generational trauma while being unafraid to confront the racial tensions that can simmer below the surface. She doesn't try to understand her mother's behaviour, just survive it, but when she starts having flashbacks about her mother's past, she is forced to peel back layers of generational abuse. This is a potent uncovering of a toxic mother/daughter relationship, generational trauma, and a daughter's attempts to break free - I'm sure many readers will love it but me, I just feel like I've read this story so many times before in contemporary fiction. Oranges are famously known as the go-to source of vitamin C, and rightfully so, since a medium orange (about 5. It was important to me the author is Asian because I'm TIREDT of white people only including Asian women to be petite, trophy wives to fat, rich white guys. She has a passion for encouraging others to eat well in simple, practical ways that are realistic for the whole family.

Grapes draw our "bad fruits" list to a close because they're often vilified for their sugar content, but grapes are not an enemy. I think my expectations going into this were a little skewed imagining this as a twisty psychological thriller and this is NOT that. There are some heart-wrenching, awkward and downright weird moments between Lily and her mother that mean you are obsessed with knowing what will happen next. If you think of it like peeling away the layers of an onion, you need to picture a humongous onion as there are many, many layers.

Often feared for their carbs, bananas are an inexpensive fruit that's available year-round and highly versatile.
