Lois Lowry certainly knows how to weave a believable fictional story. Set during WWII, a young girl named Elizabeth unwillingly goes to live in her grandfather's house, along with her sister and mother. Elizabeth's father is sent off to serve in the war during this time, though that is not the focus of the book. Liz focuses on the double meaning of ‘stroke’. There’s the medical condition, then there’s the ‘stroke’ of midnight. Liz associates death with the passing of time. Death (and life) is starting to take shape for her. She is slowly learning that everything must end. She has already learnt that children can die at any time. Now her beloved grandfather is severely compromised, restricted to a wheelchair.

Viewers will know that the stalker is actually Lily’s tutor Theo Hawthorne (William Ellis), who has had full access to Stacey’s house for several weeks. He has been very clever about keeping suspicion off of him up to this point, but could he be set to slip up? Summer has ended now and Liz has started at the local school, described as a Gothic building. Charles has to go to his own school, because this is in the days of racial segregation. This means Liz and Charles have to end their friendship, each of them declaring they don’t like girls/boys, but they make an exception for each other. This shows how ridiculous the gendered socialisation of kids is. With Stacey trusting him completely, could she be set to put herself in further danger as he steps things up a notch? But if the past has thought us anything, it’s that it’s only a matter of time before the truth comes out and, with Peri Lomax on a mission, the influencer’s days are most certainly numbered.

There were things to be afraid of in the woods at the end of Autumn Street. But the year she went to live in her grandfather's big house in Pennsylvania - when her father went off to fight in World War II- Elizabeth couldn't put a name to those dark, shadowy fears. She was grateful for the reassurance of Tatie's strong, enveloping brown arms which held her when she needed comforting, and she relished her friendship with Tatie's grandson, feisty and streetwise Charles, who called her dumb old Elizabeth but didn't mean it, and who taught her to take risks. Together the two lonely children tried to interpret for each other an adult world -which was always puzzling and often cruel. Together, finally, on a day when snow obscured everything but terror, they left that world behind them and entered the world that was waiting in the woods. Told from the perspective of precocious six year old Elizabeth who is a child of strong feelings and opinions, we learn that her father is sent off to WWII and she, her mother and her sister move to live on Autumn Street with her maternal grandparents. While living in Pennsylvania, she develops a very special relationship with Tatie, the family cook, and with Tatie's grandson Charles. This is done to preserve the anonymity of the people in that area, as some postcodes cover a very small area, sometimes a single building. Liz confides her fears to her big sister Jess in the dark. In naïve, childlike fashion, Liz thinks that if mother gives birth to a boy then that means father must die in the war, in a causation chain. This is from overhearing adults say that babies born during a war are boys, to serve as replacement for the lost men. Liz also says that she would like to be the boy of the family. She can just wear boy clothes and cut her hair short. By the age of six most children have a strong sense that their gender is immutable, so Liz is an unusually gender fluid six year old girl. In this way, Liz is an unreliable narrator. However, as an older woman narrator she is plenty reliable, because she’s giving the reader enough information to connect the dots for ourselves. The ironic distance between the perception of young Liz and the knowing older Liz provides interest. Peri may even find a few allies along the way, including former love rival Nadira Valli, who is similarly starting to suspect that Rayne isn’t the caring and considerate girlfriend she claims to be, having witnessed her gaslighting tactics first hand. Though they may not be together now, we get the feeling that their story is far from over, as Suki is set to grow jealous when a mystery woman starts asking around for Eve. But what she doesn’t know is that the mystery arrival is hiding a big secret that is set to tear Eve’s world apart. The huge house with all the rooms and the manicured lawn and staff is the archetypal cold house, where Liz does not feel nurtured or safe. She gets any nurturing she needs from the cook and housekeeper, not from her own mother or grandmother. CHAPTER FOUR Universal credit and other working-age benefits in England and Wales to increase by 6.7% from April, in line with September's inflation rate And what will that do to Charles (Kevin Mathurin), who is still convinced that his dad’s sudden change in behaviour is all a facade?

I have no love for where I grew up. It was suburban and stifling, and it taught me nothing except I didn’t want to be there. I got out as soon as I could, legitimising my escape with good A level results. I had few criteria for my choice of University, except it had to be a long way from home and it had to be in a proper city. Autumn Street was where I found my family. Not the oppressive family I had been born into and couldn’t wait to escape from, but my chosen family. My people. My person. It was where I found Nancy. We were the sisters we had never had. Except we both had sisters. Not to mention, mother-in-law and deadly enemy Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) and daughter Lucy’s murderer Bobby (Clay Milner Russell) will surely not take too kindly to her return. Can we expect a fair few fights in the not-so-distant future? Charles has obviously had a realization – he didn’t know until now that children can die. They’ve both been disabused of this notion, and this is not going to help Liz with her anxieties. CHAPTER NINE It seems Stephen Reid is on his way out of the ITV soap according to reports. Pictures from location filming appear to show him fleeing to an airport and trying to leave the country. It comes after the body of one of his victims is found.
