Step 2: Use tailor’s chalk to make an arc at the bottom corner (on the fold) and a larger arc from the bottom to the top of the fabric. (See picture.) Cut out both arcs. Repeat this step with your gold fabric lining. Pin the lining to the cape and trim the bottom of the gold fabric making it a few inches shorter than the blue fabric. Hem the bottoms of the lining and cape, if you’d like. Leia wears this dress at the end of the movie while on the medical ship with Luke. Step 1: Measure your child’s waist and add a couple extra inches for seam allowance. Draw a cummerbund shape onto a piece of paper. Use it as your pattern to cut out the cummerbund from the pleather fabric. You can create the center rectangular detail with just a piece of pleather itself or by covering a piece of craft foam with the pleather fabric (which will make it sturdier). Add details with acrylic paint or fabric maker. Hot glue the rectangular detail onto the belt. Then hand-sew or hot glue velcro to the ends of the belt. This is not a “hot Princess Leia” costume. This is a “comfortable Princess Leia” costume. The top was cinched at the waist by a belt made of the same material as the top. On top of that there is a sleeveless silk cloak with subtle embroidery and quilted detail at the shoulders. Medical frigate GownThis step is much easier said than done, and was by far the hardest part of this DIY No Sew Easy Princess Leia costume. I admit I literally sweated a bit during this stage, until I realized that no one was going to see a slightly crooked or rumpled seam.

Princess Leia wears this suit throughout the film, from the time the Rebels arrive on Hoth to the time they escape the planet. She also wears it during the Battle of Hoth. Ditto with the arm length, which I finalized before taping the inside seams so that I wouldn’t have to do one bit of extra work with the fabric tape. And since I only plan to wear this Halloween costume a couple times and mostly in the dark, I didn’t think anyone would notice (and in fact, no one has).
