The Mountfield SP53 is a big petrol mower designed for large lawns up to 2,500 metres squared. As the weight of this mower is 34 kg, it is a good decision that this mower is self-propelled – especially when laden with damp grass too. The self-propulsion is a single speed at 3.7km/h – this is what I would call a very comfortable / slow walk speed that will for sure assist you when mowing your grass on a steep hill / incline. See my video above, where I am demonstrating this action by holding the mower easily with one hand only. The grass on the day was damp and as you can see there was some wheel spin, however the mower had no issues gaining traction with some encouragement and ascending the steep incline. Assembling this mower is pretty straight forward. Unfortunately, the instruction manual does a pretty poor job of explaining how to do it. Mulching attachment doesn’t strictly ‘mulch’ the grass in the traditional sense, though it is a step up from simply discharging. It would probably be better described as a ‘discharge aid’

The best part about it is that the clippings are blown into the turf and not left on the surface. As such you can’t see them and the finish is excellent. Maintenance

The mower powered through grass which was a good 5 inches tall and the rear discharge worked perfectly, leaving the cuttings on the ground.

If creating a striped finish when you mow the lawn is important to you, choose another machine. This mower has wheels instead of a rear roller so it won’t leave stripes.It was long overdue for me to carry out a review of the Mountfield SP53 self-propelled petrol lawn mower. After testing the smaller brother of this mower ( Mountfield SP41) about a month ago, I wanted to experience and clearly see the difference in power, size and compare the performance and features of both, so you know what mower is the best option for you and your garden. This mower has a 39cm cutting width and a 40-litre grass collection bag which makes it a good option for small to medium sized lawns up to 400sq meters. Not only having a part cloth collection bag reduces the weight, it also assists with the air circulation resulting in a more efficient collection of your grass clippings. The disadvantage of a cloth collection bag is that they are more prone to damage – this is particularly so if you are having to mow close to sharp bushes / shrubs. Having said that, replacement collection bags are readily available here in the UK as are all Mountfield parts. An advantage of the hard top on the grass collection box means less dust and debris being projected into the operators face.

The Mountfield SP53 is powered by a Mountfield 166cc 4 stroke engine, providing sufficient amount of power for larger lawns. (mulch, collect and rear discharge) I’ve spent several weeks with the Mountfield SP41 and for medium sized lawns, it’s really quite good. Assembly The chassis on the Mountfield SP51H 3-in-1 Self-Propelled Petrol Lawnmower benefits from a powder-coated paint finish that’s both corrosion- and scratch-resistant. The SP51H mower is compact in size and delivers great manoeuvrability whilst reducing user fatigue thanks to it’s self-propelling function. Furthermore, the SP51H boasts an excellent and smooth acceleration thanks to its clutch transmission.
